Hello all THF members! I am an avid reader of this forum and now I'm a bit puzzled with a problem, so I kindly ask for help and advise.

I bought a new Seagate HD, the 320 Gigs one. So I plugged it in and copied all my data to it. After that, I turned off my pc to get the old drive out and the new in. The problem was... errrr.... that the NEW disk fell to the ground. :ouch:

Here are some considerations:

I didn't see what part took the hit.
The HD was not working when it fell.
The HD fell from... 1.4 meters.
chkdsk reports no bad clusters, no problems at all.
There are no strange noises, no clicking, no apparent damages or strange behaviors, etc.

The disk works ok but now I fear that down the road it may have consequences. I don't know what to do. I may stick with my good old, never dropped, hard disk... or should I keep the new HD and forget about this event?

So the big question is... What do I do? Any help/suggestions are appreciated!

Carpet or hard floor?
Not sure of the G ratings, but as long as it wasnt on, they can acutally stand a fair whack.

As long as its working fine now id say ur all good.

I agree with mrmez. The drives have automatically parked the heads for a long time. If it runs and shows no errors, then your probably OK. Needless to say, practice safe backup procedures.

Oh, thanks for replying!

The floor was hard. I don't like carpet, it makes me sneeze and let's not forget the static.

I finished running checks and they say that everything is fine. I like to hear from you guys, telling that everything will be fine. It makes me feel a little better.

Edit: While we're at it... What do you make of my old disk hddreport? It works Ok, but all those warnings are weird. I'm downloading SeaTools to do some more checking. Any good tool to asses disk status? What can I use to check if it's using NCQ, SATA II ? My mobo is an Asus P5K, surprisingly it doesn't have the AHCI function in Bios so I'm thinking NCQ is not working now.

Neither of those links had any data in them. You will probably have to cut and paste the data into a post. If you can't do that, then a screen capture and post a pic. If your drive is showing smart errors then I would get the data off of it and pitch it.

Oh, they were working just fine when I checked. I'll upload some images then. The drive has no smart errors but... Well, see the images and draw your own conclussions.

It just looks like the drive is getting old, but I'm no SMART expert. Here is a shareware program that might be able to give you additional information Hard drive failure prediction, estimate hard drive life software - PalickSoft website. Or you will just have to Google the terms and come to you own conclusion, I would be a little wary though.

If you still have a warranty on that hard drive then try to get it replaced. Symptoms of the hard drive that fall might not show right away. The fell could have loosen something and or disalign a component in the hard drive. You're best bet is to get a replacement warranty.

I had thought about getting a replacement but the warranty would not cover this kind of problems... Besides, I don't think the store guy would give me another hard drive. Unfortunately in this country the replacements are shady at best. They won't exchange things to you if they work to some extent. If it had some kind of problem or failure I would send it back inmediately but right now I can't because there is no failure.

How can I replace it if there's no failure? Shall I tell the store guy that I dropped and expect him to give me an exchange?
