i read somewhere that this graphics card http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6814130076 could work in this dell dimension. my question is, could this video card work in the dell and, if there are any, are there any better video cards that would work in the same price range. thanks for everything.

here is the dell dimension 4500 specs : http://support.dell.com/support/ed [...] tm#1101836

Physically the card will fit, though I wonder how well your 250W PSU can power the 7600GS. They aren't very hungry cards, but it might strain the supply. I vote you do it. You'll need to upgrade anyways, and even if it takes the video card if/when the PSU dies, you'd need a PCIe video card.

I have the PCI Express version of the 7600GS, it works well on a 450w Power Supply, but on a Dell PSU, which are really low wattage as it is (and usually weak on the 12v rails) probably won't handle this. What CPU do you have? If its a Pentium 4, I'd strongly recommend a new Power Supply if you want this card.

The 7600GS will run fine with that psu. What does wattage have to do with psu performance? AMPS, AMPS, AMPS
My Dell 305w psu is 22amps and I run a 8600GT. I can even run a GTS if I wanted to.

Whether you look at watts or amps (it can only do 14A) the PSU comes up a little short. I'm sure the 7600GS calls for a 300W, though I don't know how many amps. Considering that he also has a power hungry P4, I'm not 100% sure I'd try it.

thanks for all your quick replies! i do have a pentium 4 2.0gHz.

my situation is this: i need to use my computer for at least another year, and would like to do some light gaming. this is really hard right now with my ATI rage 32mb card that came with the system.

from everyone's replies, i'm reading that seems like it would be risky to install the the 7600 GS because of PSU deficiencies in my system, especially since i need to use the computer for at least another year. is this accurate? if it is, can anyone recommend other cards?

thanks again!

The 7600GS is a very efficient card. If he has a Northwood core he should be just fine. If it's an older Williamette I'd be concerned about the PSU.

I have two 12v rails of 20 amps each. And it can't even power an Opteron 170, and that 7600GS for more than a few hours. Well the Opteron sucks up 110w off my 12v rail or so. :P
