Hi all,

I have an ASUS PC with a DVI-I output. 3 by 8 pins and a seperate set of 4 pins in the middle of which is a 'cross' that looks like it will take a 'slot' type of connection both vertical or horizontal - or maybe a row of pins, horizontal or vertical.

My Viewsonic monitor has a DVI-D connection: 3 by 8 pins and then a 'slot' that runs in the same direction of the 3 by 8 pins (i.e. along the length of the connector).

I went out to get a DVI cable and was told that there are many types - hence the above description.

From what I understand the DVI-I connector is 'multipurpose' analogue or digital (?).

As I want to run digital (I think there is a problem with my A/D converter on the mobo as the colours of text are 'strange' - from black to purple - even in the same word - and alternate lines clear and 'fuzzy') what cable do I buy?

Sorry for asking but the local PC suppliers are of no help.
Contacted Viewsonic locally but they don't stock DVI cables (!!!)
ASUS agent has 'dissappeared'.

Regards and thanks

Theres only one DVI standard, any home theater store like Circut City, Best Buy will have what you need. DVI or Digital Video Interface will do the job. Theres also HDMI which is backward compatable with DVI, HDMI caries both sound & HD video. You don't need the latter.

SL,

Sorry, should have explained, I'm stuck out in 'Sunny Kuwait' at present.
Present T° is 47°C (117°F). So you can see why after 1 1/2 hours slog on foot I decided to revert to this forum!

I don't know how you guys handle the heat, here in Southern CAL it is 88%F that must seem cool to you. Theres nothing local out there? Take care of yourself and keep up the great work you guys are doing. ;)

I didn't know there were so many different versions, but I'm staying in the digital world.

Thanks for the reference MM!

There's also a nice reference on Wikepedia but your is better as it is more simple to select the right cable from the DtaPro table.
