We all know that 8800GTS has 500/1600 default clock referenced from Nvidia but we also can find from some manufacturers that produce 8800GTS preoverclock a little higher than reference e.g. MSI has 8800GTS 575/1700, EVGA AC3KO and XFX XXX Edition etc.
My question is :
Does the vga with factory preoverclock can reach higher clock after we manually overclock it compared to the default clock vga? If not, why are we bother to spend a few extra $ for preoverclock one since they are all can only reach a certain max clock setting before it becomes unstable?
u can always OC and OCed card,
with a normal card u OC and reach the factory OCed cards too or even higher, but sometimes u cant (like my asus 7900gtx) i cant OC it very much it becomes unstable :

No, a stock card can usually reach the same speeds as a pre-overclocked card. Every card is different though so just because you got really high clocks on one card doesn't mean you will on the next.
Most people spend money on the pre-overclocked cards because they don't want to go through the hassle of doing it themselves. It's not worth the $30+ premium IMO.

I will say that sometimes the factory overclocked cards are actually better chips, because the company has to use the better chips to run in the overclocked systems to make sure they wouldn't actually need to replace them due to the stress of overclocking. However, this is just an opinion. I will say that I got the MSI OC edition for actually less money than the non-overclocked EVGA version.

I've always bought Pre overclocked cards..... just makes more sense, IMO they need to make sure the chips are better and the cooling is more adequite than a stock based card. Somebody should really do a study on this, which cards in general are better over clockers.....pre Oc'd or stock. hmmmmm. Sometimes you will get a Pre Overclocked card....and it is already near it's limit.

Oh yeah? I also own a MSI 8800GTS 320 OC Edition 575/1700 but I can't OC it above 600/1800. It's sad but true considering my friend's ASUS 8800GTS 320 also with default clock 500/1600 but can OC it to 625/2000.

Even the design of the board or where a capacitor is placed on the card can make a difference though. You could buy another exact MSI and it might overclock better or worse. It varies even between the same exact models a bit.
