I was led to Acronis by a friend several years ago and fell in love with it. You could back up certain things, or the whole hard drive as a compressed image. You could run it in Windows, or boot into it. It also had a suite of software that could manipulate the HDD. It filled all my needs, and still does for that matter. But I'm curious, what do other people use and why? Keep in mind this is for a home PC. Thanks

Like you, I have used Acronis for years, but will not even look for a replacement. The Boot time Backup or recovery as well as the Rescue CD, and disk cloning provides all the recovery one could ask for.

the free compressing tool
that is 7zip
why? Because it is free
and i prefer clean installation of windows rather than a system recover.
