Tom's Hardware > Forum > Graphic & Displays > Graphics Cards > nVIDIA and ATI counterparts?

I have fairly good knowledge of nVIDIA cards and which ones are good, but I have no clue of ATI. Could someone here tell me the counterpart for each model I give? I've heard of the ATI cards, but don't know what their #s mean.

nVIDIA 8800 GTX and GTS (for ATI, is it X and XT?)
nVIDIA 8600 GT, GTS
nVIDIA 7950GTX
nVIDIA 7600
ATI 1600
ATI 1900
ATI 1950
ATI 2900

For ATI, is the X and XT what GTS and GTX are for? If a laptop has 1600, is that good enough to run games like FEAR or today's FPSs(not Crysis) at high or max? Also, what's better: a 7950GTX, or an 8600 GT(I've had some tell me I'm better off with a 7950)?

The 2900XT is equivalent to the 8800GTS 640
The 2600XT and pro are close to the 8600GTS and GT respectively
The X1950pro and XT are the equivalent to the 7950GT
The X1900XT and XTX are close to or better than the 7900GT and GTX
The X1650XT and Pro are close to the 7600GT
The X1600XT and Pro are close to the 7600GS

The 1600 in the laptop is rather week. The 7950 is indeed better than the 8600GT.

Check the Tom's charts for a better comparison: http://www23.tomshardware.com/graphics_2007.html

Thanks a lot! Well my friend kept telling me that 8600 GT could do DX10 while 7950s couldn't, but my thinking was the higher the #, the better. Well I'll probably always stick with nVIDIA, ATI seems good, but nVIDIA is just used more often and more well known.

Your friend is correct in that a 7950 cannot do DX10.

And neither can an 8600GT, at least not at any frame rate you'd find acceptable

if it's a straight choice, the 7950 is a better card, because at least it will run DX9 well, where as the 8600GT won't run either particularly well

You mean the one I put at the end of my post? Then yes.
