I go to transfer like 1GB of folders and drag from the 100 mb/sec ATA/IDE drive over to the 3GB /sec SATA drive..Why does windows explorer show like 67 minutes...should it not be 2-3 min max???MB is abit ip35 pro...there was a option on the MB cd to install J micron controller...I did not install it...the IDE drive was recognized in explorer did not see the need??? the ata drive was not defragged in over a year if that plays a part???

any ideas why so long for tranfer of 2 healthy drives?

Thanks Vince

No way, but then again I have bid my farewell to PATA/IDE harddisks ages ago.

Disable antivirus/malware/etc. Have you installed all the drivers from the Abit CD? One of them is from Intel.

dont trust the windows time estimate, it can be way off...
how long did it actually take to move the files?

anyways, make sure the ide cable is plugged all the way in, and DMA enabled for the drive

Cable was snug....I'll will install intel driver from CD and look up how to check for dma enable

SATA to SATA drives are a rocket..........

Thanks guys...Vince

Uhh... the 100MB/s and 300MB/s (3Gb not GB) stated for PATA and SATA are interface speeds and have nothing to do with drive performance. Older 7200RPM drives will average in the 40-50MB/s range over the drive's capacity and newer drives will average closer to 60MB/s. SATA vs PATA is only somewhat relevant and only on newer hard drives that are capable of peak transfers approaching 100MB/s. Your SATA to SATA being fast is probably because the SATA drives are newer and faster than the PATA drive and has nothing to do with the interfaces.
