Hi all , i am getting a new video card which is going to be most likely xfx 8600 gt,but i am afraid my proc is not up to the mark.my PSU is 400W and i don't want to upgrade both psu and proc.

I have the following:

Intel P4 3 ghz(prescott)
1GB DDR2 RAM @ 533mhz
Intel 915gev motherboard
and i am going to buy xfx8600gt.

Question is-Will i be able to run games at medium settings. Will my proc bottleneck performance.

I just recently bought xfx 8600gt. Here's my setup.

Amd 4000+ (socket 939)
2 gb ddr
some gigabyte pos mobo
8600gt xfx
450w psu

My proc doesn't bottleneck card, but it is a little better than a p4. Still, p4 prolly wouldn't bottle a 8600gt much or at all. My recommendation, dont get a 8600gt. And if you feel you must get a 8600gt, please do not get a xfx. Mine runs HOT!!! I have some pretty decent airflow, and on stock settings it runs at 80*C under full load. (Overclocked it pushes 90)
As to the settings you could run, I can run bf2142 at 1280 x 1024 w/ medium settings and get playable fps. P4 may struggle a bit more to do it.
Summary: if you are getting the card in part to watch movies along w/ play games, i'd say go ahead and get it, but i would strongly recommend getting a evga. If you simply want to play games, i would recommend a 7900gs if you want to stay in that price range.

its not in stock but thats the card I would recommend if you can find it someplace. O, and btw, 7900gs beats the pants off of the 8600gt and the 8600gts, so dont make the mistake and get a 8600gts either. Proof of last statement:

GL and sorry about long post

Well, man evga is not available in my country and i think xfx cards are a wee bit superior when it comes to performance(correct me).I have 6600gt from xfx and that made me xfx fanboy. ^_^

the_pulp See I'm not not the only one who thinks the 8600 GTS is not a very good idea, I'm sorry if I may have upset you but we are just trying to stop you from doing/buying something that you will regret later on. :ange:

Yea, the 8600 gts isn't any good. You will not be happy with it.

yes i have a 7900gs. Overclocked it from stock 450/1320 to 600/1620 and still stable with no heat issues.

I say go for a X1950XT. It costs a bit more than a 8600GTS/7900GS, but it's worth the difference.

As I run a pair of 7900 GT's I would have no hesitation in buying a 7900 GS myself and vip3569 has confirmed it's OCing prowess so yeah I'd go for it Dude.

wait.. How many amps are on that 12v on your psu? You may not be able to run the 7900gs. Im using a 3ghz p4ht, 1 gig of ram and I find that it goes very nicely with a 7600gs. You guys do realize, that he was talking about a 8600GT, not a gts? I run 99% of my games at highest settings, but that is a 1024x768. A 7900gs will probably me bottlenecked by your cpu though.

Dont know what mouse monkey is on latley here he is advising someone to buy a card he tried to tell me i cant buy anymore, which as smokedyou911 has pointed out(because he read the post correctly)may well strugle on the psu the op has.
Personally i would go with a 7600gt and not a gs GDDR 3 though not 2
I suppose you could look ay a 2600xt which would give you the same limited DX10 as the 8600 and from what i have seen on reviews would perform a bit better than the 8600 as well .
