Have you guys seen the new HD-ILA 52" TV?
I saw it tonight and it is hands down the best rear projection TV I have
seen to date!
Any comments on this or their older D-ILA would be appreciated.
Thanks

It and the 61 inch have been out since last summer. Early ones had problems,
including screen quality and ballast (which sparked a recall). Go to the AVS
Forum and you can read about these. JVC does appear to make good efforts to
fix them, and new sets seem better.
I agree with you about the picture quality, although it seems very dependent
on the signal. They are super on HD input, but don't do as good a job with
standard signals as LCD projectors from Sony and Hitachi, in my opinion
(although still decent).
The D-ILA is definitely on my short list for purchase, as is the upcoming
Sony A10 and A20. I'm not in a hurry because I want to look at the new
Sonys, and wait for JVC to sort out the bugs as well as introduce their new
56 inch model described in the press release.

Just got one and it is fantastic.
Older D-ILAs were recalled so I made sure to demand a newer one. Those
built in January or later should have the same imaging components as
the newer sets that are coming out soon. The main improvement of the
newer sets are features (PC and Firewire ports, built-in ATSC tuner,
CableCard support). There may or may not be improvements in some of
the electronics that may or may not produce slightly better picture
quality.
I was unwilling to wait as I got a great deal on this JVC. In my
opinion it has the smoothest image of all the RP technologies. DLP has
better black levels but more artifacts (rainbows, motion blur, etc.).
LCD has "screen door effect" and poorer black levels than the JVC. The
JVC has the brightest picture.

I've asked a couple of stores to switch to SD and to my eyes the D-ILA is OK
on SD, but not as good as Sony and Hitachi LCDs. Colours seem less true,
picture looks less realistic. However, some contributors on the AVS forum
who own these sets say they're happy with the SD image.

Actually it's better than I expected.
I have digital cable and the channels that are broadcast in digital
look good. Of course there are the usual artifacts you would expect --
SD simply cannot look that good on any large display. The analog
channels are a bit fuzzier, but certainly watchable.
I decided not to let SD factor too much into my decision. I wasn't
willing to sacrifice HD quality at all, which I would be doing if I
went with LCD.

I looked at one (about 60" if I remember correctly, I do not remember the
model number) when I was shopping and, even though I spent a lot of time
adjusting the settings in the stores and cycling through a variety of
sources both HD and SD, I was not as impressed with the picture as others
are. It would not match the brightness and contrast of the Mitsubishi 62725
that was my final purchase. The whole three chips versus one has it's pros
and cons (like everything) - no color wheel to worry about, instead you get
convergence to worry about.

I've never heard of or seen motion blur as a problem on a DLP set and I've
had my Mits WD-62725 since before Christmas and I watch a LOT of sports on
it. I've never seen the rainbow effect either but I do understand it can be
a problem for other people.
Regardless of my opinions though, I'm glad that you are happy with your
purchase, because that's all that REALLY matters in the long run. :-)
I do have a question for you though, did you purchase an extended warranty
that includes yearly convergence adjustments? I ask because after seeing how
the cabinets of these RPTVs (LCD and DLP anyway) are constructed I worry
about flex in the screen affecting convergence in sections of the pictures.
This (screen flex) may not be as big of a problem on a 52" set as it is on
larger ones though.

Same here....admittingly, the newer jvc wasn't out then(mid-january)but the
mitz was better. Largest gap was viewing sd channels. The jvc seemed to
bleed colors a lot too.
Alot of this is subjective....beauty, is in the eye of the beholder:-)

And here I thought this was the "rap" of LCD sets? (artifacts, blur). I
have zero "blur" and no artifacts on my 62725. I've also never seen a
rainbow. Well, not on my TV anyway:-) But I acknowledge it's a problem for
some. I've also missed the "headache" too. Geez....One lady at CC claimed
she got motion sickness from a sony LCD!!
Only complaint I have is an occasional reset I need to do.....about once a
month it seems. It's a cablecard/mitz problem and the last firmware update
helped. But it still needs some work.(firmware).

I did get the extended warranty mostly to cover breakdowns and lamp
replacement. I don't think it covers yearly adjustments.
I don't believe the JVC sets will go out of convergence over time,
like CRTs. There are convergance issues out of the box on these sets
due to the less-than-perfect optics. It bothers some people, but not
me, as I can only notice it when I stand right up to the screen.
The service menu does offer convergence adjustment, though I haven't
dared go into that menu yet.

Where did you purchase the extended warranty? Typically they don't cover
bulb replacement. Just wondering, that sounds like a pretty good warranty.

It's the Best Buy 4-year DLP warranty, which includes 2 bulb
replacements. I think it was $399, which is a bit steep, but I
splurged because they matched a very low price for the TV.
