I'm using an ATI HDTV Wonder card in my computer for HDTV. I get all the
Chicago digital channels except Ch 38. When I tune to Ch 38, the card sees
all 6 Ch 38 channels but won't decode the picture or audio. It says 480p or
something like that at the top of the screen when I first tune to the
channel but no pix or sound. I can receive other channels OK that show the
same number at the top of the screen. Is that the resolution or what? What
could there be about Ch 38 that's different then all the other digital
channels? The signal strength shows all the bars.

480 is the resolution and P(progressive) denotes progressive scan. 480i
(interlaced)is more typical and closest to analog. The station may be
sending a signal but no data. Check with the station or someone else who
receives it. All of the problems I've had like that have been the broadcast
not the card but I don't live close to the transmitters.
If it is transmitting correctly try rotating and/or tilting the antennae. It
may be multipath.

I have talked to others in the area that can get Ch 38 but on an HDTV
tuner - not on a PC card. I can receive the following digital stations
(good picture and sound):
Channels 38-1 ,-2, -3, -4, -5, -6 all show good signal strength and the
resolution but no picture.

I have the ATI HDTV Wonder as well, and the channel scan does find all 6
ch 38 channels just as you mention. the format (480i, 720p, 1080i, etc)
that shows at the top when I try to tune to it varies depending on what
the last channel I successfully tuned was broadcasting at.
What is interesting is that when I've looked up what channels should be
potentially available, I see the following for WCPX-DT (PAX):
HDTVpub.com (seems to be user-supplied) lists it as DTV Ch(s):
43-1/2/3/4/5/6
antennaweb.org lists it as Channel 38.1 Frequency Assignment 43
When I add channel 43 as a new channel in the channel list, I get a
channel that looks to be PAX-like on 43-1 (it is showing a prayer show
right now @12:45am -- I don't normally watch PAX, so I can't be positive
that this is what is supposed to be on ch 38.1)
I can't figure out how to manually add a subchannel in the ATI MMC
software tho, so I can't tell if 43.2/3/4/5/6 work.
Kind of annoying that the software doesn't let you just enter a
frequency/channel(+subchannel) without adding it in setup first.

hmm, seems like you get a few more channels than I do. at first it seemed
like several more channels, then I realised that it was prolly cuz I set
up the channels at like 2 or 3am originally. so it found a few more
channels (only midnight this time!), so it is just 36-1, 60-1, 62-1, 66-1
on your list that I'm not getting.

WatchHDTV is a great little program that allows you to put channels into a
text file. 1,0 or -1 IIRC(1and-1 at least). It has a better signal strength
meter than DTV and does not send the video to the hard drive. Best of all
it's free for now. Look for the zip file at the bottom of the first message.

This may also be of interest to HDTV Wonder and other multimedia card
owners. It's a DIY project but very interesting. I just got my graphs set up
so I can run Watch HDTV and see video from the tuner on my AIW at the same
time. It will do much more.
