Disk read error - XP on a new ATA WD HD

hi,

I've just replaced my old HD with a new ATA WD5000AAKS hard drive on an ASUS K8N board.
Tried to install a fresh XP SP2 (from CD), created a NTFS partition, formatted and installed XP.

After the first boot, I get the message "Disk read error, press CTRL+DELETE".
I do have an access to the HD, see the files but it won't boot.
The new HD is detected by the BIOS it is on the boot list.

I already tried: fixmbr, fixboot, chkdsk /R
I do have the latest BIOS ver (however it is already 1 year old)
Any idea how to proceed??

Many thanks
Gil

  1. Go here and get the drive test software that you feel comfortable using and test you drive.
Just enter your drive model number and download the test software.

Just the one question, is it the ONLY drive in the system? On the first boot after Windows install the drive letters are defaulted to the physical order in which the drives are connected to the controller, and that can change the boot drive drive away from C: if it was not the first physical drive. Fresh installs should always be done with just one drive connected.
  3. yes, it's the only connected drive!
  4. Just curious, are you using an Antec powersupply (like in a Sonata II)? Flaky PSU possibly, had it happen to me on my current build. Had to buy a Thermaltake PSU, no probs now.
