I have an old PC that I want to use again just for basic office stuff. The mobo has an AGP slot so I was just gonna get a cheap 2nd hand AGP card for it but there are so many choices, ATI 7000 series, Geforce MX400s etc, 32meg or 64meg.
Can anyone remember which were good/bad and also if there is an easy way of knowing whether the mobo is AGP 4X or 8X?
Getting a Geforce 4000MX will do the job for office and even some good games. My Friend still runs some games with the 4000MX 64mb is well recommended. It will also help if you multitask and photshopping, you'll get great visuals.
Most AGP is 8x ? right Don't know if its 4x So I'm sorry I can't help you with that. But I don't think that will matter if you put a Geforce 4000MX in it.
I still use a AGP rig, with an Intel Celeron D 2.66ghz and a Geforce 6600GT and I run quake 4 with med details at a stable 30-90 fps. and half life 2 1024x876 at 4xAA and 16x Anisotropic. So I still love AGP Cards, Geforce 6600GT is legend...
Any kind of cheap AGP card 32mb and up should be adequate. Don't waste your money on a card you don't need. Ask a friend or co-worker they might have an agp card sitting on a shelf somewhere. I know I have a couple of them ;-).
If the AGP slot is the same lenght at a PCI slot then it's either AGP 4X or 8X. AGP 8X cards are backward compartible and can be used in a AGP 4X slot. If the AGP slot is only about 2 inches long it's most likely an AGP 2X slot and it's almost impossible to find AGP cards that can be used for those.

I don't know what you're talking about PCD, a 2" AGP slot????? Never heard of it. Perhaps you're thinking of a PCI-X slot.
AGP slots are keyed with a divider and AGP cards are notched to accept this key method. AGP 2x (3.3V) slots have a divider located closer to the front of the slot (closer to the edge of the motherboard and back of the machine). AGP 4X/8X (1.5V) slots have a divider located closer to the back of the AGP slot (away from the edge of the motherboard, closer to the front of the machine). A unversal AGP slot has no divider in it at all allowing it to accept all AGP cards although a 2X card may still not work with it depending on the motherboard.

I stand by what I said. Ask a friend or co-worker he might be able to pick one up for free. If he was my friend I would certainly give him one of mine. I have a TI300, Ti4200 and a 5200 sitting in my garage in a box doing nothing. These types of cards are all over the place and he should be able to find one for free or next to nothing. A Ti4200 would be a nice card.
