Did you ask your friend what he did, e.g., what he loaded on it? Might give you some idea of how to fix it. Have you talked to him about replacing it?

This probably won't work but have you tried right-clicking on the device and clicking properties? Then uncheck read-only. (or looking at the advanced options)

Also try another computer. I've had similar problem and it turned out that it worked "SOMETIMES" on another computer then it crapped out completely

Do you have a HOLD button on the MP3 player which prevents buttons being pressed on it while its in your pocket.
This must be disabled when its connected to your computer to be able to write to it.

I would see if you could right click on the drive, select properties and see if the drive is full or if there are any files on the drive that are write protected.

 i have kingston DataTraveler™ 256MB

"DTI KF081905 5262-014 AOOLF CHINA" thats all what is written on it

i was using it..it was working fine..but now,

when i tried to delete a file = the disk is write-protected
i google-ed every thread/post and found/tried these things

tried to format (quick / FAT32) = the disk is write-protected
tried to format (quick / FAT) = the disk is write-protected
tried to format (not quick / FAT32) = the disk is write-protected
tried to format (not quick / FAT) = the disk is write-protected
tried to format via DOS = the disk is write-protected
tried tools (i.e onBeley, other low format tools) = the disk is write-protected
tried the regedit fix WriteProtect DWORD value 0 = didnt worked
tried Microsoft© scanDisk™ = the disk is write-protected
tried Microsoft Defrag Tool = the disk is write-protected
tried everything on many computers with xp and vista = the disk is write-protected
tried to reinstall with drivers of win 98 = doesnt work
reinstalled windows,on the 1st boot,i tried all of this = didnt worked
tried all of these things with restarts and re-connecting usb = didnt worked
i can access/copy/Read data but i cannot "Write" anything on it

There is "NO WRITE PROTECTION SWITCH" on the usb flash drive
i have broke it open..looked at every thing and still no switch
all other usb drives,mp3 player, mem card reader work on my PC
using XP sp2 AMD 3500+ A8N-SLi Mainboard,7300GT,1.12 GB of RAM
(1.12GB is bcoz one is "1gb" and other one is "128MB,dont ask me why)

some things i found suspecious

1.in the device manager it shows "Generic USB2.0 Device" , others show USB FLASH DRIVE..etc

2.from a software "onBeley" it shows the "frimware = %z!Y" and "Low-level support = No"
filesystem = FAT32

i know that it is a small cheap 256MB disk..useless..but i want a solution to this problem..because many ppl have the same problem even with up to 8 GB,different manufactures
usb drives and memory cards,HAVING NO WRITE-PROTECT SWITCH

my email = amir_zohaib@hotmail.com

:ouch: :heink: :fou: :pfff: :??:

Does the software for this player have a password?

I would read the documentation. Some say that you have to hold down certain button.
