Windows xp i starting that takes forever then freezes on the login page

Hello, my windows xp doesn't not seem to have a safe mode option, I can't get to enter 'use last known good configeration' (it doens't even come up when loading). I get to 'windows is starting' and that takes for ages then on the login page it freezes when I click on a name to login.
