Hey i just bought a 500 gb Maxor SATAII drive and a maddog enclosure. this is not comming up on the removable storage devices. Also my sony dvdburner isnt reading discs. Also i tried a usb drive which isnt working either. but the usb does come up as "new hardware found", it just doesnt show in the removable storage devices.

Might i mention i downloaded a virus, hence the reason i got the HDD and tried to save my files.

Any help would be appreciated

What virus did you get and were you able to clean out the system?

Also if you want to save your files...You could try installing the drive in your system, bring up drive manager and format it which will make it active and then copy all the files you need over to it.
After you can re-format your 320 GB WD and install a fresh copy of xp/vista what ever you're running.
After you're all updated and running with a good anti-virus program scan the Maxtor and if there are no viruses copy your files back over and wipe the Maxtor, put it back in your external case and you should be good to go!

Hope this helps!
John.

i dont know the exact name of the virus, but i was looking it up on google via my sytem task manager viewer and a user put it was a fast moving virus with no cure he found. i tried to download virus things to delete it and every one said it couldnt do it (various errors). i tried AVG, and it deleted it, but killed my computer screen while the compter kept running. I restarted, and after thats when i saw the various storages wouldnt work. i dont know if thats what happened to and why they wouldnt work

Anyhow, how do i install the drive and bring up drive manager if my computer doesnt sense it is there? in bio it senses its there, but not the computer when i load it.

Thanks again

Open the control panel, click on computer management, go down to drive manager and open.
You should see all the HDDs in you system (these are the drives that are connected to your SATA/IDE cables).
Right click on the new drive and format it. This will also make it active.
After it's formatted you can copy over your important documents and mp3s, etc.
Don't copy any exe or system files as these are probably infected.
Did you cd drive work before the virus? If so, then you can go ahead and set your bios to boot from the cd drive with your xp disc in and it should go to the setup screen.
When you get to the install a fresh copy of windows you'll get the HDD info with the drive letters.
Blow away the old windows partion and the recreate the partion.
Then follow the setup prompts and finish the install.
Don't forget to have all your other discs for Mobo, Graphics, Sound, etc. ready.
After your Mobo drivers are installed get your updates from windows.
You'll probably need sp2 in before your graphics card will install properly.
Hope this helps!
