I'm getting 2 500GB HDD for WD and there coming in tomorrow. Is there anything that I should do to prep them before hand or are they ready to go right out of the box?

Thanks

If you want to be really sure that you new hard drives are okay, do a full format rather than a quick format.

Full format verifies every sector of the drive to make sure you don't have any bad sectors. I would format one drive overnight, and then format the other drive during the day when your at work or in class.

depends on the model, what model number are they?

if you are using the raid specific wd drives, the wd5000ys series, check to make sure that the firmware version is the latest. an earlier firmware version occasionally had problems dropping out of raid arrays due to it's TLER feature causing the controler to think the hd had been disconnected. the latest firmware fixes the issue.

I got the WD5000AAKS from newegg and there on a truck to be delivered anytime now.

Thanks for the input. I'll make sure to format each drive.
