Also using the Seagate ATA hard drive and NEC dvd-burner that I have at the moment, but am planning to buy a new SATA2 drive and burner in the near future.
I'm just wondering what kind of wattage I'd need to run that build, that wouldn't cost me a fortune to run (student, not much spare cash, gotta pay for electricity, etc.), but would leave some headroom if I decided on a 2nd (or 3rd) hard drive.
The wattage depends on the parts you pick and on the efficiency of the PSU. It does NOT depend on the maximum power of the PSU. For example if you have a PC with a Rosewill 500W PSU and you replace the PSU with a PC Power & Cooling 750W, your electricity bills will go DOWN. That's because the watts you actually use are the same (same GPU and CPU and so on) but the efficiency is better so the watts you actually take from the wall outlet are fewer.
The 8600GTS will disappoint you. I would recommend an x1950pro, x1950xt or 8800 GTS 320 MB instead, depending on your budget.
A good PSU for you would be Corsair 620HX.
Maybe get P5K instead of P5KC to save some cash. Don't worry about DDR3.
Thanks for the advice. The P5KC is already bought although it was on sale at the store I got it (new) for slightly less than the P5K which was a nice find. My budget at the moment isn't great, but I would like something, even temporary, until my funds pick up again. I'll see if I can pick up an 8800 GTS, if not then I'll grab a Radeon
