OK, my mom bought my brothers Dell XPS but my brother kept his HD for another computer. He sold the XPS to my mom with a brand new samsung HD, but didn't bother trying to set it up. I was going to try to install Windows XP Pro onto it. The computer started up and started the Windows Setup, but as soon as the screen read "Setup is starting Windows" it goes to the the blue screen of death.
This screen says:

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is identified in the stop message, disable the driver or check with the manufacturer for driver updates. Try changing video adapters.

Check with your hardware vendor for any BIOS updates. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then select Safe Mode.

Technical information:

*** STOP: 0x0000007E (0XC0000005, 0XF853E0BF, 0XF898A208, 0XF8989F08)

*** pci.sys - Address F853E0BF base at F8537000, DateStamp 3b7d855c

I could use some help here. I was thinking maybe I need to have drivers installed for the HDD before trying to install windows but I don't know how to do that. I have no clue how to fix this myself, so I thought I'd ask for help before hiring someone to take a look at it. Thanks in advance for any suggestions and help you can offer.

Here is a thought, tell your brother that a bucket of parts is not a computer. He needs to load the drive he put in the machine and provide a working computer. What a chump. :pfff:

The BSOD may come from a bad power supply or bad memory.
Test the memory with memtest86+.
You could try running a Linux LiveCD to rule out software problems. If Linux runs fine, it is a software problem.

the error is related to your new windows installation running into driver needed for the Dell hardware. It is most likely a basic HD controller, ATA or SATA. You know where it asks if you have a driver floppy hit F6. This is where you would insert the controller disk. The hard part is what the XPS is looking for and where to get it.

So your easiest choice is one, get your brother to get you the system disk that came with the XPS, try and find one to download and burn or have your brother, clean out all the PORN he has on the old drive and put it back....

Or he could go into BIOS and set the SATA to IDE not AHCI then no driver should be needed.

I don't know how his brother is going to use the drive anyway, It's probably the original OEM copy which would be a pain in the butt to move to a new machine anyway, and also illegal. His brother should have installed a fresh OS and then installed the drive as a slave and copied the data off of it, and then put it back into the Dell. If he wanted to get all an@l he could have deleted the sensitive files with a file shredder.

I still think he should beat his brother with a broom and make him fix it.

yea AHCI disable would work if that is the issue but I have only run into that on newer laptops and not desktop systems.

yup, I don't see how he's using his old drive on a different system except as a secondary to access all his old sh*t. Its possible to use it as boot but a huge pain in the butt, or a painful reinstall process.

I can't imagine that Dell would have installed a single drive as AHCI either. I think that is the only reason that drivers would need to be loaded, or Dell is more screwed up than I thought.

I got into the BIOS and am not really sure how to disable AHCI, there is a section called SATA operation and gives me a choice for RAID Autodetect / AHCI (which is the default), Raid Autodetect / ATA, RAID on, or Combination. Is that where I would disable it?

Give me the choices in a list I can't understand your post. If one option is ATA that should be it. What is usually the choice is IDE. It may be RAID Autodetect/ATA. It's just like Dell to put AHCI as default.

The only one that fits is Raid Autodetect / ATA. I suggested that earlier, did you try it? You might need to boot to the Manufacturers disk tools and zero write the drive, (At least for 5 minutes) to clear any garbage. First try to load the OS.

Instead of using F6 to install the SATA drivers you can also use driverpacks.net to slipstream all the drivers into the install disc. It is actually the easiest way to install XP IMO. They have a tutorial section if you don't know how to slipstream.
