Alright, everyone is going out for Quad Cores so I thought I'd go straight for octocore.

How does this look: http://secure.newegg.com/NewVersion/wishlist/PublicWishDetail.asp?WishListNumber =4738954

Parts List:
2x Intel Xeon E5310 Clovertown 1.6Ghz
Supermicro X7DVL Dual Socket 771
2x SUPER TALENT 2GB FB-DIMM DDR2 667
Biostar GeForce 8600GT
FSP FSP700 (Quad Rail, 700Watt) PSU

That's about it, of course there's a hard drive, DVD burner, case, etc...but I just want input on those things above. Are those xeons any good? Are they based on Core 2?

wait for the dual amd quad systems the 4x4 set is use cheaper ddr2 ram and support SLI also right now you can a dual opteron system with DDR2 ECC and sli support.

I could care less for SLI. I would go with Opterons but I'd need 4 of them to have 8 cores, and thats insanely expensive. Maybe I should wait for Barcelona?

Anything I can think of. It will be running some server apps, running folding@home, downloading stuff, and for playing games (many of those all at once). The truth is, I don't need such an uber amount of processing power, but I thought I would skip the quad core buzz and go straight for octocore. Also, I'm hoping to have a completely lagless Vista (or actually in this case..Server 2008) experience.

Hmmmm, only the E5310 CPU?

You realize your system will be given a bloody nose when Penyrn hits the workstation market in the next few months?

Do you plan on replacing the CPU in the near future, hence starting with the low power E5310?

Oh, and only 4GB of RAM? Isn't only 4GB of RAM going to bottle neck the system?

I can't see why it would, I can't think of anything I would do that would use more than 2 or 3GB of RAM... I will wait for AMD Barcelonas and Intel Penryns I guess, I don't really need a new computer yet. (see signature)

Vista sure does love cores.

That MOBO has 6slots for ram though, it would be unwise to leave them all unfilled. If you're going to go dual processor you have to be prepared to spend A LOT of money.

Also, be aware, taht with just 1.6ghz of power, come accross a single threaded game which most are, and with that graphics card your system will really struggle.

Aside from facts, I must ask something myself, whats the difference between a Xeon and a normal core2quad?

personally I'd go with an E-ATX board, and definitely the 5000X chipset instead of the 5000V. The X is better suited for general computing, specifically when using the comp to play games.

The X7DAE or X7DAE+ are what I would recommend, a bit more expensive, but worth it IMHO.

The difference between and Xeon and C2D (speaking of the server and desktop variety respectively) is the quality of the Xeon is higher and the platform they operate on is different (LGA771 vs. LGA775). Clock for clock the Xeon's should perform about the same as a C2D but he platform does change the way they perform real tasks.
