Windows xp recognizes external drive then shuts off

Vaio computer running XP. Recognizes WD Passport, show the desired action screen, then suddenly the device is no longer recongized. Keeps cyckling from initial recognition to not recognized.

Tried Tweak UI, no effect. Still recognizes drive slowly, then the Autoplay pop up scans, then the Mixed Media pop up. Does not matter what I pick, drive disapears and then is "re-discovered" and repeats process.
Tried starting in "Safe Mode with networking" but saw no change.

It sounds like a flaky connection. Is this your boot drive or backup drive?

backup drive. Tried several different usb cables that all work fine on my other computer.
Not sure if this is one or two problems. 1) recognizing the drive and b) when I try to access any files on it, it shuts off or disapears on the computer. IN either case the computer keeps finding it and then slowly recognizes it, and then it drops out.

It's likely the USB cable, or the power adapter.
