I am converting from an ATI GeCube x850xt to a Nvidia MSI 8600 GTS OC tomorrow and want to know what steps I need to take to clean out the drivers for the switch. I am running Vista 32. Thanks for the suggestions!

You don't *need* to do anything special. You'll probably want to uninstall any ATI graphics software though as it probably won't work with the nVidia card. Turn the computer off, swap cards, turn it on, install new drivers.

If I were you I wouldn't be getting an 8600GTS, I'd try to get the far superior X1950XT, which incidentally has the same price tag.

Show were you can find an X1950XT for $140.00. For a temp. card with DX10, its a no brainer. I am running BioShock maxed out with extremely exceptable fps. Yes I heard your rant on nothing below 45+ is acceptable to you, even though it shown its hard for the eye to discern much above 30-35 fps.

yeah, the 8600gts kind of sucks, many other choices that would do far better and cost around the same.

Oh well, if you're happy with it, then fine. And maybe you can't see beyond 30fps, but I can surely tell the difference between 30 and 60 fps.

It's not really a question of noticing a difference, its a question of playability, if you insist on 60 fps then you will have to cough up for a gtx (although the 8600's could probably have been better value and power)

Just like it's hard for anyone to discern the price difference between a d Gf8600GTs and GF8800GTS. Right ?!? :sarcastic:

I am biased with ATI cards after seeing the difference in the overall better screen display so to me I'd just fork out the money and get the newer 2900 model. Or I also agree to a point with the 1950xt suggestion to a point also, You wil not see a real big performance improvment from those cards your talking about. It also depends on the cpu your using to small degree in lower res... Me I'd go with the 2900xt if you could afford it. I go this route mainly because I hate to keep buying new video cards for each new generation of games that come out and overall it costs about the same in the long run with a lot less hassle. I got the card ordered and hope to see it soon. It's a def. Nvidia killer and looks better to boot. At least to me and other people I know who have used both cards notice the difference. The last Nvidia card I had I thought it looked a bit bland and when I got the 1900 ati I wasn't just seeing things. The screen was much better to look at.
but to each his own. I don't think buying a card that will give you a extra few frames is a good investment uless it can do a good bit at max settings and res. for your screen. Even my 1900XT or is that XL, it's been a while sence I've looked but it was expensive has a hard time at my 1600x1200 native res screen with a couple of higher end games like oblivion and when more modern direct x 10 games show up I imagine they will be even more demaning so save and get a card that will last about 3 game generations or buy cheap and buy another when the next batch comes out and so on.
It just depends on how much you need and can afford and how much your into games. Then there's SLI but to me that's a joke marketing scam anyway but it will give a marginal boost to a cheaper card... heheh... If you want to spend the extra for that sli card that moves you closer to the high end card anyway. But like I said, It's really a preference to each person and if you feel this wil work then do it, the driver removal issue is simple, ATI has a uninstall util that removes their drivers and is very simple.
