im about to plunge in and upgrade my old presario with a new video card so i can run games like WoW and cs:s only one problem.

the 7600gt's reccomened psu is 350w, yet mine is only 250w. Will i have to chip out the extra bucks and get a new psu to use this card or will it be safe?

I too tossed a 7600gt into an older Compaq. My Compaq was bought in late 2004 and has been used 24/7 with its 300watt/18amp Bestec garbage PSU. The 7600gt runs fine.
I then swapped the P4/motherboard combo for a dual-core Opteron 165 that I overclocked about 500mhz along with 4 sticks of RAM. I'm waiting for it to kill my motherboard lol. Acutally, I think I'm going to order the 520watt Corsair from buy.com.

I think you couldn't burn out the card with a low wattage psu, it just probably wouldn't run at 100% since there is less power than what it actually needs. The worst I think that could happen is that you'd burn out your psu since you're overloading it. I would suggest at the minimum to get a good enough 400W power supply just to have some sort of security.
