AMD schedules to launch two 2-way Opteron (Barcelona) server processors on September 10 this year, according to sources at server makers. The Opteron 2348 and 2350 will have core frequencies of 1.9 GHz and 2.0 GHz and will be priced at $320 and $390 in 1000-unit tray quantities, respectively.

So, this is far different than the original idea that it will launch in June (Original projection) with high frequencies, but 2 processors in September should be great! 1.9 and 2.0 Ghz, a little low, but I can't complain too much - it will really depend on how well they benchmark. At those price points, it seems clear they are targeting to compete with the 5335 and 5345 (or maybe they're anticipating Intel price drops and are targeting the 5345 and the 5355, since supposidly, 2.0 Barcy does amazing in one benchmark vs 5335 when under AMD lock and key :)). This still leaves MP as an unknown as well as if they will have anything to compete with Intel's upper end of the scale.
Just under a month left! Exciting!

Edit: I'm surprised no one caught my error in product names (just shows how confusing the numerical system can be :)). Note that there is no 5500 Intel series for Xeons (currently). Changed the references to the (correct) 5300 series :-D

True, but if the Opteron stinks/kills compared to the Core 2 based server chips, or the Penryn based server chips, that's a larger indicator than what we have now (complete unknown vapor). :)

They've been able to get Phenom X4's to past 3ghz.. so yeh sure they can compete with Intel's upper range, considering that and the AMD's clock for clock get like 20% advantage.

fact 1, clock for clock, amd's architecture IS and WILL be higher than actual C2D/C4D. unknown proportion.
fact 2, at 2ghz, barcelona required power is 68W
fact 3, at 120W, the frequency reached by this architecture will be 2.6ghz on barcelona

i estimate agena to use 120W, at a 2.6-2.8 ghz then, overclocking is unpredictable, A64 6000+ was not far from the chip limit...

AMD's technology is always innovative, let's compare them...
for barcelona, server solution is amazingly refreshing
AMD 3 socket barcelona,

3x395$ -> 3x 2.0ghz barcy, 3x 68W = 204W and 6ghz processing power with 5% more performance/clock. 1200$

2x900$ -> 2x 2.66ghz quad , 2x 120W = 240W and 5.33ghz processing power 1800$

amd's solution costa less, have more processing power, allow more ram max capacity ( or decreasing price avoiding pricy 4gb modules ) and use less energy...

intel will have to drop server chip prices again on barcelona's launch

Problem is, intel's new one is just around the corner too, and its got 45nm packed with even more cache and has some snazzy new features.

Well, Looks like another AMD hard launch has turned flacid and become a soft launch. Im sure we'll still get the media circus this month though. AMD's been getting really good at getting Henri Richard and its media machine to the launch on time, they just havent figured out how to get the products there.

Anyone want to start a pool that they dont make sept 10 either?

20% clock per clock?

The only "real" benchmarks that have been done are obscure ones that don't really matter to anyone. Plus the fact that there are AMD engineers breathing down the testers neck.

Now, I have always been a fan of AMD, I like to root for the underdog. But to say 20% clock per clock, is a little outlandish, especially given what we know today.

actual clock per clock performance isn't out yet, compared to quad-core xeons, the clock per clock performance WAS 20 to 40 % compared to older Xeons on PAPER, theorical advantages. this means with utopical drivers and software optimisation, it reaches 40% all the time but only a few exceptions will do so.
then, xeons performane per clock went up a few more % .

i think lastest optimistic estimations was 10-20% more efficiency/clock
and most pessimistic was a few % like 3%, 4% compared to future intel xeons.

still, i'm always looking for the best overclocked budget cpu.

the performance/cost at it's best... actually, it's the E4500 M0 4ghz and Q6600 G0 3.8ghz.

this means, if phenom can reach 3.6ghz overclocked with a 10% better clock efficiency, 3.3ghz with a 20% better clock efficiency.

if the clock goes as far as for intel's best on overclocking, i feel intel's quad will drop prices again

Oh cmon now, thery're not useless benchmarks.....look at all the humour they've provided. Not too mention that they've shown what AMD really thinks of their consumers...that we're a bunch of brainless twits easily suckered by pretty pictures and bright colors

LOL,

Hell, why not quote FUD. AMD has been quoting it ;) ....whats good for the goose is good for the gander.

Fact 1. Due to NDA's (or maybe lack of interest), you (nor anyone else at this point) have any facts.
Fact 2. Refer to fact 1.....

weeeeeeeee, so much speculation!!!

Nobody but a couple guys at AMD know how well the new quads will perform, everybody else is pretty much just making stuff up based on what's happened in the past 5 years of new AMD/Intel products.

How about everybody just waits till some independent reviewers have run the new chips through some benchmarks and published their results before voicing meaningless opinions?

P.S. I hope the new quads are good, or I've been putting off a system upgrade for no reason, then again all these price cuts have been making me a happy camper :)

P.P.S I think i just insulted basically everybody in this thread, whips out the asbestos suite in preparation for some major flameage.

Considering that K10 is a new arch, you can't say that the 20% advantage per clock is intact. We have no idea how the arch will compare to Intel's current arch or Intel's next arch.

Geo,

No insult here as i just said the same thing :)
