Hey everyone. After reading the article on tomshardware about the e2160, I've decided to give it a try. I'm going to go with a GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3R LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX Intel Motherboard, because the article said the p35 family was a good choice for ocing and for ram I'm going to use the same as tomshardware did for their system (Patriot Extreme Performance 1GB (2 x 512MB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200)) My questions are this:

Does this motherboard seem like a good choice?

And my second question is this: What is the most someone has been able to OC this processor with the stock heat sink fan? Someone suggested I should get a Tuniq 120 Tower to get it to the desired 3.2ghz speed. But I've read that people have been able to get to 3.0 with stock heatsink/fan.

Answers to these questions and suggestions would be great.

Thanks.

That's the problem with overclocking. Everybody brags about their o/c's, but nobody tells you the details. You're on the right track. Some still think their onboard graphic crap boards can o/c as well as P35/P965.

In cooler temps, a stock hsf can performance as well as an aftermarket one in warmer temps.

Yep, P35 is like less than 5% behind X38 in terms of overclocking for MUCH less.

DS3R is the best o/c'er from Gigabyte, especially for quads

I'd say 3ghz with stock air cooler is about right in warm weather. It's up to you to decide if the cost of a Tuniq Tower is worth the extra mhz.

I also bought a e2160 along with a P35-DS3R. I am waiting to get some Patriot memory Extreme Performance ddr2 6400 and then it's on to some oc'ing. Maybe we could stay in touch to share info on our oc attempts and results.

Anandtech said they could get the E2160 to 3.0Ghz on stock cooling and voltrage.
Personally, My E4300 runs on a FreezerPro7 @3.0Ghz with below stock voltage.
It can go higher, but then I hear the fan on load.

The E2160 should OC a little easier due to the fact that there is less cache so a little less heat.
So It would not seem like a stretch to get the E2160 running just fine at 3.0 w/ stock cooling.

However, there are alot of factors such as case ventilation, ambient room temperature, etc....
The warmwer the room adn the case, the more work any cooler will need to do.

Personally, I would just give it a chance on stock cooling.

I was planning on using a similar set-up:

E2160
Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L
Corsair 2x1gb DDR2 800

This will be my first attempt at overclocking as well. I'm planning on just overclocking to a more moderate level, like 2.4GHz. Would I have to do anything other than just increase the FSB from the stock 200 to 266 to achieve this or is there anything else that I need to be concerned with?

Thanks for the help guys. Sounds like I'm on the right track. I'll give further details about how I set everything up and how it's running.

Thanks again.

Im going with the e2180 10x multiplier. The 2160 has 9x and the 2140 has 8x. Its not much more then the 2160 and it will be easy to push 3.4-3.6 with aftermarket cooler. 3.6 is only 360FSB x 10 WOOOOOOOOOOT.

I also got an e2180 and asus p5k mb. for cooling puted igloo 5060pwm
overclocked it on 2.66 with no problems and all i hear is my hdd runing :)
i want to overclock it on 3.0 or more ... so can someone say shoud i put more voltage or to leave it on auto (i see it change depending on the loading on the cpu)

I am also a first time overclocker and will be attempting to overclock the following:

E2160 (Stock cooler, initially)
GA-P35-DS3L
Crucial Ballistix 800
Cooler Master RC-690 case

I'll let everyone know how it goes, I'm waiting for the items to arrive in the mail. The case comes with 3 12cm fans, but can use 7, should I buy more to increase internal airflow? If so, which are best?

Thanks for the suggestion on fans, I should be getting the case today so I'll check out what it comes with and look into adding some replacements.

First off, kipd1, you can't use that RAM with that motherboard. It has to be DDR2, the stuff you have listed there is oldschool DDR(1).

Anyway, I'm running the following setup:
Thermaltake Matrix case with 2 120mm Yate Loon DSB12L fans
Antec NeoHE 550w PSU
E2160 (SLA3H)
Thermalright Ultima-90 with Scythe S-Flex SFF21F fan
Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L mobo
2x1GB OCZ XTC Platinum Rev. 2 PC2-6400 RAM
hardrive, video card, those aren't important here

On the stock cooler I was able to get 3.0GHz (333x9) at stock voltage (1.3250v), but load temps according to Core Temp were in the mid 60°C range. With my Ultima-90 and Scythe fan combo, I can hit 3.4 (1.4000v) and it is perfectly stable for heavy gaming and daily use, but crashes when I run Prime95. SuperPI and Orthos check out fine, though, even running 12 hours of Orthos. Load temps are 45ish, tops. Adding more voltage does not cure the issue, this must be my highest.

RAM is set to 2.1v (0.3 in the BIOS, as it assumes 1.8 to start) and timings of 4-4-4-15.

I can't recommend this combo enough, a 110% rock solid 1.2GHz overclock on a 1.8GHz CPU is pretty nice. I wish though that Prime95 was solid at 3.4GHz, almost doubling the stock clock speed :D

Ok, so I have my new computer up and running now (E2160, DS3L mobo, Crucial 800 RAM, XP SP2, stock cooler). I have read through the basic guide sticky in this thread, but can't find many of the options (notably PCI Clock Synchronization). Does anyone with the BIOS which comes with this mobo have suggestions on what to turn off so as not to sync the other components and fry them?

the ram is a bit OTT, you would see more performance benifits from 2Gb of Corsairs XMS 677 (which is dirt cheap now)

and i would get the Zalman CNPS7700cu and save the moeny, this is a Budget OC remember, the C2D will become Unstable before the heat is the real issue.

What I don't get is why they chose the 2160 instead of the 2180, when we're talking about $10-$15 difference in a several hundred dollar build. They spent extra on the motherboard after all. And the cooler. And only got 3.1Ghz stable.

You'd think that the people who write the reviews here would at least TRY to put the best product forward in a test.

BTW, the 2180 does 3.6 with a similar cooler(10x plus M0 stepping). Talk about penny wise and pound foolish.

3.7, but pridence says to to to the maximum and back off a step(in this case 3.6)

I get the feeling that Tom's wrote it up months ago when the 2180 wasn't available, because it's a total no-brainer decision.

Thanks for that link Plekto, I was looking for something about that.

Funny - I just started a thread going about e2160 vs e2180 because I had the same thoughts as you.

Hey all

I am leaving AMD and jumping back onto the the Intel Band Wagon.. :).. I read the article on the E2160 while I was looking for a replacement for my dead AMD K8N NEO2 Platinum MB. Smoked it after trying out the Koolance memory cooler. It leaked and smoked my memory slots... My advice is don't try it, the bags are to easily ripped. Well anyway I am now looking for a new system and I want to OC. I have a Koolance PC3 720 water cooled case along with another separate full 1/2" system cooling a Swiftech MCW6500-775T CPU TEC cooler (used a 939 bracket for my FX-55), and the MCW60-T GPU TEC cooler on a 6800GT. I know I want to get a MB that has a future like the NEO2 did. I got 4 years and 5 different CPU's out of that board.. " Moment of silence please... "

Well anyway my plan is to purchase the Best Video card, Motherboard, and ram now along with the e2160 or 2180. I want to make sure though that I will be getting a MB that will be strong when I go to a Quad core chip in the future. Also I wonder if any of the MB's out now will be able to run the newer Intel CPU's with the 12mb cache that are due out soon.
So P35, X38, or 6X0i......?????
I like what I have read on the ASUS Blitz Formula and Extreme MB's, though I think DDR3 isn't for me right now.
The EVGA 680i SLI boards seem good also. So many opinions though.

GPU: I'm thinking about getting a 8800 Ultra card, but which one Im not sure. Depending on the motherboard choice though, maybe a ATI 2900. Hell for the cost of one Ultra I could get two 2900'ds. But I wonder if I would really see a difference? I've never really liked ATI, but then again I used to be a staunch AMD man.......

Memory: I like the Corsair Dominator ram, but don't see a lot of people overclocking with it so Im open to any suggestions.

This PC is just to play on. Gaming and overclocking is all it will be for.

Well I didn't mean to be so long winded. I am looking forward to chatting and learning from you all! :)

I'd wait and get the 2200(2.2Ghz x11 multiplier) and as for a video card, I'd just drop a new or used 7950GTX in there. Best card for cheap, especially since the DX 10 cards are still kind of buggy and not really supported. IMO it doesn't make too much sense to spend a ton of money on a video card in an otherwise budget system.
