My friend has a 3 year old Gateway(310 X Home). It only came with 256(333Mhz) memory and he is now looking to upgrade. I actually have 2-512(333Mhz) chips.

My question is will my old memory work in his Gateway. I have never really worked on any gateways but I hear they are sometimes picky about there memory. Is this true?

The easiest answer is to try it and see if it works. Many motherboard types are picky about what memory they accept, not just Gateway. If you were buying some ram, then you wouldn't want to make an expensive mistake, but since you already have it, there's nothing to loose by trying. Other than that, many types of ram that are not listed as acceptable still manage to work.

Over 50. Seen it, done it, can't remember it, but I miss it.
