I suspect you graphics card is a bit lacking in power.

Perhaps you could - and this applies to so many questions I see on these forums - give us a little hint by telling us what hardware you have.

I agree with saint19. Sounds like you need to reinstall the driver.

That's a good place to start. It's especially noticeable in internet browsers when you haven't installed graphics drivers or they've become corrupt.

Yea Rachel, the driver could be the problem. Update the driver and let us know the results.

If display drivers not installed, then you can experience wave problem.
Download the latest drivers for your display chip/GPU and install first and then check!

I had the same problem on a Lenovo J115 when I changed from Vista to XP. I have been dicken' around for 2 days because guess what, Lenovo doesn't have drivers for my Viewsonic VA903b monitor. NOTHING I tried worked. Until just now!
I put in an old video card I had laying around that someone had given me a couple years ago, and PRESTO.
All is good again
