Hi,

I've got a computer bought 2003 and the PSU is a Fortron 300W.
The PSU is highly loaded and runs hot. It will propably soon go *pop. I wonder which components might suffer from the breaking PSU.
Also I'd not like to buy new PSU as I'll just replace the whole computer.
The most important thing is the HD. What chances does it have? What about the other components?
My specs can be looked from here: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/ [...] eudo=mm_vr

Hoping to hear about it soon

A Fortron 300 watt power supply, good lord your lucky it hasn't killed your entire system already.
I would just get a new computer, or build one from parts.
Figure out what you want to do with a new computer, look at prices and parts capabilities and set a budget.
Then buy or build.
Though I would replace the power supply with a PC Power unit and use the old computer as a file server.

when it goes pop, it can do one of 3 rthings, fry everything, fry somethings, fry nothing, you have a 33% chance of it being everything and 33% chance of it being a few things, if it does fry a few things there is a 50% chance it will take out your hdd, so that gives you 16% again there, so 33+ 16=49% chance of it taking out your hdd...

When a PSU fails, my experiences have shown me that the most likely candidates for destruction due to PSU failure, are the motherboard, hard drives, cpu, and video cards.

It all depends on the build quality of the PSU, and how bad it fails when it does finally go *pop*....a good quality PSU will most likely have protections that could save your components.

when your psu gets pop the result is basically what would happen if you dropped all your parts in a deep fryer

You got the analytical and the subjective, pretty much covers it. I especially like the deep fryer. I would just buy another quality PS now and keep it when you want to upgrade.

After you hear the "pop" sound, you generally get a nasty burning smell. This is often then followed by the sound of a wallet opening and money flying out. . .

Why dont you just by a very good psu now and use it. Then funnily enough you could also use it for your next build and your next and your next and next but probably not the next one.

What is the point of coming on here and telling us your PSU is crap and going to blow but hopefully you will be able to salvage whats left.

Either buy a new PSU or dont turn on your PC.
