Noob here...

I have an ASUS P5K and an E6750. What would cause it to go from a 6x multiplier to an 8x multipiler, automatically. I assumed it would be the Speed Step set in the bios, but after disabling it, it still floats between the 2 multipliers while idle. Under load it stays at 8x.

TIA!

Disable EIST and C1E in the BIOS to stop this.

The above knowledge is only copied from a quick google search of "ASUS P5K" bios speedstep options

Works that way on my board though.

It basically lowers your processors speed to lower heat/energy. Sorry to change the topic but if you were going to have an overclock on, is there anything bad about having speedstep on as well? I mean, your CPU will just overclock itself back to whatever you have it set when it needs to, which sounds pretty cool.

no there nothing wrong with having Speed Step on with an OC, in fact its benificail, stops a big OC being a Behemoth Of power all the time and give the energy bill a time to catch up with your income
