More Information

I need a new MB/CPU as my current one is limited to 512MB(2gig in theory, but the board isn't stable beyond 512 due to a poor design/cap issue that can't be worked around.(ASUS no less, go figure).

I like the Gigabyte boards with their solid state capacitors. Very nice. But which processor? I don't really need to do multitasking, either - just a good box to run games on.

Choices:
Celeron 440 or wait for the 480(1MB cache??) and get it to 3Ghz or better.
P 2140/60/80. Get it to about 3ghz and leave it there(low per and no noise are key)

I plan to use one of those barrel shaped Zalman coolers on it, so I expect it to essentially run without the fan ever turning on.(did this with a E6600 and same thing - stock, no fan. Client was happy)

Part of the reason for this budget build is I don't want to replace my 420W power supply if I can help it. So the questions are:

- why didn't Tom's use the 2180 in the test, when for $20 more, it appears to be a whole lot better?
- If I plan on only going to 3Ghz, could the 2140 do just as well? ie - push it to 375Mhz and cal it quits for less money.
- Should I go with the more expensive 2180 and get 3ghz with only 300 Mhz(and apparently, stock voltages)

My current rig is a 2.4 P4, so anything like this will be a rocket. And I definitely DON'T want to increase the memory voltage any as that guaranteed will decrease its lifespan. So no silly stuff like 4ghz on a 2180...

EDIT: Or should I just wait for the E2200 in December and run it at 333fsb?(can't imagine that would require me touching anything - just set to auto and go)
