So I'm looking to build a new DX10 gaming PC, but I'm a student on a budget and I'm trying to keep it on the cheap. I've heard good things in the "bang for your buck" department about the Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 and the eVGA 8800GTS 320 MB. As for the motherboard, I'm currently thinking the Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L because I've seen that series recommended quite a bit and it's cheaper than the DS3R (I'm not really sure what the difference is, maybe you could enlighten me?). Hard drive I'm thinking Seagate, just cuz they've never failed me, and I want 2 GB of RAM, whatever's the best value. I also probably need to think about cooling because I live in an upper apartment with no AC and it gets hot in the summers. I just read a bit on the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro that sounded pretty positive and the price is right. So this is what I'm thinking (prices are canadian):
Any input would be awesome, mostly as to what case and PSU would be a good match to this stuff and easy to work with for a first time builder. I'd like to keep this under $1500 CDN before shipping if at all possible.
That system looks decent.
The only thing I would suggest is that if you are getting an afterstock cooler, you will probably need some thermal paste. you also might want to include an operating system, unless you already have a copy that you are planning on using.
Also, do you have speakers that you are gonna hook up to your sound card?
rabid: Yeah, I have a pair of Altec Lansings w/sub that I'll probably keep til I can afford a better setup. They're that ancient PC beige though, and I'm going all black with the new PC. I have issues with things that don't match, so I don't think they'll last. As for OS, I think I'm going to have to see if I can get a student discount or something on Vista, otherwise I'll just go the XP route and upgrade (if you can call it that) later.
emp: Thanks for the suggestions. I was actually looking at that Centurion case briefly before but I didn't read through all the reviews. They look pretty positive, and the case is pretty stylish for the cost. I think I'll opt for the Antec 550 out of those 3, just cuz I don't want to skimp on the PSU and I hear Antec is one of the best brands.
So, this is how it sits right now. Any other opinions would be much appreciated. Is the ram I picked okay? I kind of just chose it from the front page of that site, don't really know too much about it.
All I know is you believe too much old advertising about Vista Ultimate. For same money you can get much more secure & stable system with Vista Ultimate. Its NT6, so full step or more above XP. aLSO 2600 game cards are $100 deal & dx10 drm & just better.
I have Micro atx asus m2r32 vm hdmi, cost less than your Stated choice (85$ 2 months ago) & your HOT, there may be few full ATX out few weeks ago, yet havn't seen any vista tests on them. Anyway all rest of stuff you listed is great on Vista ultimate system too.
You're aware that the HD2600 Pro/XT is a POS not good for any gaming right? I mean, the 7900GS destroys it, the 7950GT annihilates it, and the 8800GTS simply dominates. It may be true that it fully supports DX10, but that doesn't mean it has the raw power to play any games (talking about the HD2600).
The board you mentioned is an AMD board with an old chipset, not an intel one with the newest chipset out there.
Don't take this the wrong way, but if you're going to try and help people here, then do yourself a favor, read and get yourself up to speed with what's going on today and anything upcoming in the future, instead of recommending old tech for someone trying to get a new build.
Also I don't think anyone here mentioned Vista Ultimate, but even if it was the case, I do think it's a waste of money to get it, the only vista version that is more or less worth buying is Home Premium 64.
Actually I use Fire GL v3100 as its only $28 & does flightXsimulator & Half Life 2: coast at 44 fps. I am intrested in better Vista Ultimate chipsets & mainboards if you wish to name few, its probably few. Cutting back performance with editions that scale back to NT5 or even NT4 is bad idea, just because it says Vista means little unless it isUltimate. Also Server beta3 2008 is most powerful of all. yet not raslly media oriented.
