Hi, I'm about to update my system from a P4 to a Q6600 G0. While I've built more systems that I can count (for other people!), since I've always purchased new top of the line PSUs for all of them I've never had to worry much about compatibility.

However, I'm about to upgrade my machine, and would like to reuse as many components as I can.

Right now I have a 400 watt Antec SL400 PSU. It's technical specs can be found here: http://www.antec.com/specs/sl400_spe.html

Is this PSU up to the job of running the new system? (Abit IP35 Pro, Q6600 G0, X1950 xtx, 2gb of ram) ?

I'd assume since it can handle a power hungry P4 2.5ghz machine, surely the new much more efficient Core2 series requires -less- power.

I also noticed when building a C2D E6600 system last week for a friend that it took the big 24pin cable, and a separate 4pin cable closer to the CPU, is that specific for C2d processors?

Thanks!

Lol damn... you're insane hehe, it only has a single 12V rail with 18A. That thing can probably barely power the ram and the X1950XTX safely, and that's pushing it :p Try for an Antec NeoHE 500 or 550, Corsair 520HX, Seasonic M12 500W, or Seasonic S12 550W.

What all internal components run off the 12V rails? I always see the PSU reviews treating the 12V rails as the most important...but really, I'm versed in the internal works of everything except the PSU..I'd never had to worry about it before.

Mind enlightning me a bit?

If this PSU aboslutely cannot run my new system under any circumstances, here's the PSU I have in mind http://www.mushkin.com/doc/products/power_supply/hp-550.asp

Im just saying, if the ram had to run on the 12V+ (which isn't possible i believe), it wouldn't be able to power it properly. And I wouldn't get a mushkin PSU, they are good for memory but their PSU quality is severely lacking, they have started to clean up their act, but Im still not recommending them just yet.

Here's a review for that unit from a very trustworthy site on PSUs:

I agree that you not only need a new PSU, but also to avoid the muskin PSU at the moment. Im not sure how much you are looking to spend, but this would power your system and it isnt to expensive of a PSU. I currently have one to power the system in my sig, but I will be getting a new one soon enough because I will be going quad core, 4gb of ram and a new gfx card probably in the next 6 months. But this should work for your system fine since it is very similar to mine.

Just so you know 3Ball, that unit SHOULD still be able to power your new build. It's current output is 42A on the 12V+ rail, unless you're going on a dual card configuration, I cannot think of a single GPU system that would bring it down to it's knees.

If anything you'll probably save some money on the electricity bill, because when PSU are stressed past 50% load (Probably only when gaming) or so their efficiency starts to show more and more.

Yea I will be giving it a try before upgrading it. Once I get whatever it is that I get I will see how she does. Im pretty sure I am goin to be getting something from the next gen of dx10 cards (9800 or 3900...whatever it may be)

Best,
