I need a SATA Hard Drive tutorial!

Something describing the basics and connections on SATA drives! Why do some adapters use only part of the SATA terminals and why is ther not a specific "power to" connection? or is thereand it's just not marked?

I'm trying to read a SATA drive on a IDE motherboard. I tried the Sata to ide apadter but that physically wouldnt do as it covered the primary IDE mb socket.
I need the SATA drive to be slave as I want to boot from original IDE drive. I need to scan the SATA drive for viruses using my IDE drive.

So ANY input would be appreciated.

thanks
