PCI-E 2.0

Can someone explain the different between PCI-E 1 and PCI-E 2 beside the doubled bandwidth from 2.5GB/s to 5GB/s?

It said PCI-E 2.0 is backward compatible but I stil ldon't get it. Does the graphic card have to be in PCI-E 2.0 format to be able to utilize the bandwidth?
