Microsoft tries to unseat JPEG with Windows Media Photo specification

Microsoft introduced the Windows Media Photo picture format - .WDP - that promises better quality and smaller file sizes than JPEG files. The format uses a new compression algorithm that, according to Microsoft, can compress photos to 1/25th their original size - without visible impact on image quality. Read more

P965 Express outpaces JEDEC on road to DDR2-800

If Intel always followed industry standards, it would be very hard for the company to be a leader. This seems to be the conclusion expressed by Intel representatives following the two-day launch of the Intel P965 Express chipset (codenamed Broadwater) at Computex Taipei 2006. Read more

This is following on from my previous post
http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/ [...] 28_40.html

If u cbf reading it...
Lapped my e4300 plugged it in, didnt work, tried for 3 days, got a q6600, didnt work either. Isolated components till mobo came up sus.

So the saga FINALLY concluded last night.
After plugging the q6600 in and that not working EITHER, i managed to isolate everything and the mobo turned up sus.
So filled in an RMA yesterday. Got home and dragged my case upstairs to tear it apart. Weighed it too... 20kg!!!
So im sitting there looking at this MASSIVE task of draining my water sys, and pulling everything out and sending the mobo off and waiting 4-6 weeks :fou: :fou: :fou:

So im rly NOT looking forward to this task so i decide, just for kicks, give it another go. Plug my junk in, give it an 'asus style power cycle' and BAM! The quad jumps to life!
WTF
Plug the e4300 in SLAM, it works!

Now in my travels of OC, when u push it too far and it doesnt work, i found sometimes even a bios reset doesnt fix it. The only thing to do was power on the system, turn it off at the psu, wait 20sec, hold the power button on, (optional) and turn the psu pwr back on.

Now i couldnt do this as i had a psu silencer cover on, so i couldnt reach the switch to perform this little power cycle. But still, i reset the bios a few times over 3 days, and tried pretty much everthing else.

The moral of the story.

1. Computer components are VERY fickle
2. They can also be difficult to kill
3. Asus (and maybe others) can sometimes require a power cycle... even if u dont really change anything.

Anyway, its pretty odd really, but im glad its all working, even if i did buy a quad for nothing.

Remember the power cycle procedure guys!

Modern components aren't very fickle. Is there a possibility that there was a short or a loose connection that you jiggled when you moved your case around? That sounds like the most likely culprit. Either way, you're back in business now, so good on you!

Thx.
Trust me, NOTHING was loose.
Maybe my board is odd for some reason, maybe all p5b-d's are odd.
All i know is ive had to do this power cycle thing before, yet like an alzheimer's patient i forgot/decided not to try it this time.

Anyway, the question now...
Do i lap the Q6600?

No. Stop taking blades to CPUs to save a few meaningless degrees in temps, stick some thermal paste and a heatsink on the thing, and save yourself time, effort, and the potential for a massive headache.

Great that you've got all that hardware. I used to build my own systems, now I buy them all from Dell and upgrade odd components. No overclocking, no crashes, no excess heat or noise, run 24x7, no regrets.

Woot!

What's the powercycle option, to recover a system?
