Hello!

I got IDE WD 80 Gb about 6 years for c: drive (I got 2 drives). Lately I got a lot errors by chkdsk, but all were fixed.
It seems me that that it works a bit slowly. Is it time to change it?

Please help (I'm new)

My PC:

Motherboard GA-P35-DS3 , Radeon HD 2600XT Super ,Processor E6550 , Kingston DDR2 1 Gb 800MHz CL5

If it's six years old then it's probably a slow drive, maybe even 5400 RPM, so the new drives are a lot faster and relatively cheap. If you have the cash get a new SATA drive and use the PATA drive for storage.

As far as drive health, turn on SMART in the BIOS. I think it's on the Advanced page. Also, Sisoft Sandra Lite and other free programs will evaluate the drives SMART and tell you if it is failing.

WD should have some test utilities on their website. But a six year old drive has definitely served you well, maybe its time to retire it?

You'll have to do a re-install of your OS if you do replace it, or get something like Acronis Truimage to image the drive prior to replacement.

For a system of that spec in your sig, replace it!

WD Data Life Tools or whatever its called - do a full/advanced test and see what it says, chkdsk is a tell tale sign of bad hdd's and data corruption...

Just exactly how are we going to give you any assistance if we don't know the specs of your PC? Do you think that we are guru mind readers or something? I hate to burst your bubble, but we are lowly humans.

Please post your specs if you want additional opinions as to your trouble.

I have HD's in some of my systems that are even older.
If you run SpinRite 6.0 in mode 5 they will last as long as they still spin.
Mode 5 fixs all error, recovers all corrupted files and even corrects/fiixs bad sectors and updates S.M.A.R.T. settiings.

I agree trash the PSU and get a new one. Start trouble shooting after you know you have good power.

Let us know a website and a budget and we will help you pick a good one.

Ok, we have a problem. It needs to be in English. Maybe you could list some choices. See if there are any Corsair HX or VX models, or Antec Earthwatts there. VX450 would work well.

Hello!

I think about Chieftec 650W (popular in Europe)or Enermax 420W (for about 100$).
But today I'll get a hard disk for a couple days just to see how it works.

Do not put a hard drive in the case until you get a good PSU. Crappy power kills hard drives. You might damage the new hard drive in the time it takes you to get a good PSU.

I can't find one review of the Chieftec PSUs. A million reviews on their cases but none for their PSUs does not give me confidence in them. Just because they sell well doesn't mean they are any good. Go with the Enermax, they are tier 3 or above on the PSU list linked above.

What do you mean? You said you were looking at the Enermax 450W. I said it looks good that they were tier 3 or better.
That is a great brochure, but it doesn't mean anything. I'm talking about an unbiased third party review. And not some fluff review about how pretty it is, but a real review where they stress the PSU and measure the outputs.

Enermax is a known good manufacturer. I just don't have any information in order to judge the chieftec. They might be good or they might not, I just don't know.
