Hi. I have a MSI K9N Platinum SLI mother board and I recently bought an ATI HD2600XT card. I have always wondered can I put another ATI card and use crossfire in an nForce chipset mother board or I need ATI chipset for this.
Are SLI/Crossfire compatible between each other or you need specifically mb's for each one?

There could be workarounds but, given the fact that running SLi/Crossfire could run you into problems, why add to the headache? Just sell your old card and get a faster one. Generally if you could avoid SLi/Crossfire do so, unless of course you already got the highest end or you're getting the other card for free.
The only reason I am considering Crossfire is because I am TOO HAPPY with my current 2600XT and in some future I might want to just buy second one and put it as upgrade (instead of selling this and buying new card).
The thing is I bought mine 2600xt (Saphire) for $100 and the next good VC is min $260 (GF 8800GTS 320). So I'd rather give another $100 for crossfire (as it will be more than enough for me as a gamer) instead of selling mine (I will lose money) and giving another $260.
And honestly I am almost sure 2x 2600XT will be almost same performance as 1 8800GTS 320
Drivers getting better and better for the Radeons and 2600XT is Excelent performer for the money
I play bioshock on 1360x768 Max and my Avr fps is 37 (min 20 max 65-70)
totaly playable.
no 2x2600xt doesnt perform like a 8800gts 320 , it depends on the resolution , but in most games 8800gts 320 is a lot better than 2x2600xt
I can really argue about that one .
Checkout the Bioshock benches, how the radeons compare to GF (only DX10 is somehow not right but hey , we havent seen new drivers since bioshock is released and remember its nVidia sponsored game so ATI couldnt optimize code for it in advance and still beats GFs)
Also bioshock is UT3 engine and believe me MANY new games will use same engine.
I always thought that ATI have better future proof design with the more processor units (320 vs 120 and 120 vs 32)
as new games will get more shader heavy and then ATI will shine. I dont need some big resolution and the lesser texture power the ATIs have is not such problem. And YES I really think 2x2600XT will outperform 8800GTS 320 in res lower than 1600x1200. At least in UT3, Bioshock, Crysis etc . Wait and you will see.
2x2600XT's will not outperform an 8800GTS 320 in MOST current and future games at 1600x1200 and under. The 8800 simply has too much graphics power compared to the 2600XT. Get a 2900XT like me or an 8800 series and you'll be very happy with your decision. The 2x2600XT is almost a completely useless gimmick for the price. If I were you though, I would hold out on upgrading my video card until November or December when both ATI and Nvidia come out with their NEW midrange video cards for people with you budget. These will be completely revised cards with much better performance and very good next-gen gaming support. Be patient for a couple more months.
2x2600XT's may, hopefully beat a 8800gts 320mb, but the main prob with sli/xfire is the compatibility. So at times, some scores would show an sli setup beating a single card, and vice-versa.
just my 2 cents.
... Also 37fps on a newly bought card doesn't really seem a very good value. Considering that this is supposed to be a high mid-end part. I could say that it isn't really a good value because come Crysis or Gears of War, or some other high end game (which should be released come Christmas time) and you'd need to tone things down.
Maybe it'd be better to wait for a high mid-end part refresh.
So what do u say now ? 8800gts 320 destroys 2600xt crossfire with ease ,lol
Are you kidding me . You are refering to a review almost 2 months old!!!
They even use Catalist 7.7 beta
now there is 7.8 released and 7.9 are expected to be about 10% faster and many bugs fixed including AA performance. (at least what we hear from beta testers and reviews)
Also I said that the new games will close the gaps between nvidia and ati , that's just my thoughts but my predictions were right about bioshock, I say same will happen with UT3, not sure for crysis though.
Anyway, I bougth 2600XT as a stop card untill cristmas where I expect new cards from both ati and nvidia and I will upgrade, I just didnt wanted to give $300 for a 8800GTS with new cards around the corner and as Bioshock plays ok for me and UT and crysis will be out in November I dont really need any card now, I will need one in November , so why dont I buy a $100 card which will serve me good untill then and then upgrade with the best solution.
I hate spending money right before new things as I did before and then regret it.
My point is I really want to see benchmarks with the new catalist 7.9 (hopefully they will be out in 2 weeks top). And I wouldnt be surprised if 2x2600xt come close to 8800GTS 320.
About the crossfire consider this:
Upgrade to 8800GTS = sell my current for about $70(max) and add another $200
OR just buy another one = total cost only $100 more
so another one will come to me exactly 2 times cheaper. Thats what I consider, thats why I wanted to ask if its possible without changing my mobo. If I will need to change my mobo then crossfire is not an option at all
I will either buy new ATI card or nVidia, depending on the market and my needs at the time
