I installed Windows Vista Ultimate on my computer his past weekend. I connected my WD Raptor 150gb and Barricuda 320gb into the GSATA0 and GSATA1 ports of my GA-965P-S3. The GSATA2 controller is a Jmicron controller in disguise. I enabled ACHI mode in the Bios out of three options which included IDE and RAID/IDE.
When I attempted the installation I loaded the GSATA2 driver from the Gigabyte website for my mobo. It then detected both harddrives, but while attempting to start the installation it asked me to insert the Vista Installation Disk and press okay. Well the disk was in the drive, for some reason it was no longer detecting the IDE drives. A bit bizzare.
Anyway I had a lucky break when I loaded the driver a second time, this time navigating to the floppy driver (I had extracted the download to a flash drive). So I installed Vista fine. No dramas and it took no time to get up and running.
I had two problems on that day however, I have resolved one, but don't understand the problem. I was hoping someone here who knew more about these sorts of things could help me out.
1) For some reason after installing vista and running the windows update my Raptor stopped functioning. I couldn't access task mananger or anything. So I restarted. During the boot up process it did not detect the WD Raptor and said Boot Failure. I restarted twice more and eventually it detected the Raptor, although it crashed during Vista boot up. At this point I just turned my computer off for a minute and waited. After a minute I rebooted and it loaded Vista fine, however stopped functioning again. I ran a search on the web (google being my friend) and found an article suggesting that I switch power connectors. So I took out the SATA power connector and replaced it with a Molex connector, which was also running a fan extractor on the same rail. Had absolutely no trouble since. What was the cause of this problem. I though SATA power connectors were standalone?
2) Three times over the past two days (after install) I have tried to access a mpeg file on the Barricuda (which is just a storage drive). Windows Media Player would load up, but the file wouldn't run. I would try to load others but nothing would happen. I would need to restart the computer. It seems like it is not accessing the harddrive on all occasions. I had similar trouble with the raptor this morning trying to access the dreamscene content. It wouldn't load up the media file. Windows explorer still functions as I was able to still browse folders and what not. Anyone got any ideas what might be causing this?
