Actually the newer AM2+ processors will be backwards compatible with AM2 motherboards.

The correct answer is AMD will use the socket AM3 name for processors compatible with DDR3 RAM.

AM2+ is backwards compatible with AM2 Mobos like turboflame stated and uses DDR2 RAM.

Alot of folks are speculating November...

http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/cpu/display/20070622114456.html

There's also a chart running around the web showing the time frame for new Agena and Kuma cpus along with some limited specs (cache size, socket type, etc.), I just can't put my digits on it at the moment. If I find it I'll post it.

Actually, I think november is the release date for the next generation of AMD Phenom logo. Apparently the original logo didnt make as big a splash at the Can F1 as AMD hoped, so they initiated an emergency response program to make it more competative by expanding the palette to 65K and giving it a bigger footprint.

New logo? Is it just a shrink of the current one, or totally new architecture? :hello: They need to put that **** on the side of a blimp like Goodyear, and not on the side of some guy's go-cart helmet. Here's that chart with Phenom release times and specs.

Dunno, but given AMDs recent press releases regarding their product "releases", it seems that somewhere along the line someone, be it AMDs executive department, marketing department, the various independant web sites, jounalists, news agencies etc etc etc is confusing the terms "product" and "logo", resulting is much confusion.

So, based on VRzones charts, we can expect to see an increase of new logos from AMDs marketing/art department during Q407. As to when the actual products appear, well that is still anyones guess ;)

If he's going to wait and buy a Phenom processor, he should probably also wait to buy an AM2+ socket motherboard to take advantage of all of the new processor features. From what I've read, the Gigabyte AM2+ board should be available pretty soon, and I've got a pretty good feeling the RD790 chipset will OC well, considering it's a 65 nm chip using 10W max.

Tell your friend to check this upcoming Gigabyte board out and let him decide if it's worth waiting for. If he's planning on playing any games at all, I would seriously consider it.

wow that sounds good. Any ideas when thats going to be available since he is trying to build a AM2 ASAP and then just upgrade the processor when the new ones are going to be available using the AM2 socket. Keeping in mind he is going MICRO ATX he does not want the regular ATX

If he wants a computer now you should do fine with your first choice of board, and be able to upgrade when AMD finally makes Phenom available as a AM2+ processor.

You know, changing other things on a motherboard that makes your motherboard not work with a processor isn't any better than changing sockets. Intel does the VRM change, AMD has introduced a new socket. Doesn't really matter though because you can still drop the AM2+ chips into the AM2 boards..... give it a rest sprayer....

If he's going mATX, go ahead and get the 690G board. You just won't be able to take advatage of the faster hypertransport speeds on the new AM2+ boards, but you'll no doubt be able to take advantage of two more cores! What's f***ed up about the new Biostar "AM2+" boards is that Biostar just marketed them that way for sales purposes b/c the new processors will be backwards compatible with AM2 boards. If you look, and it's no typo, the hypertransport speed for this board is 1000 MHz, just like all other AM2 boards.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...&N=2010200022+1070930149&name=Socket+AM2+/AM2

That's b/c these are AM2 boards marketed as AM2+ sockets, even though it's crap. AM2+ cpus will be compatible with the socket, but Biostar kind of got a little sensational with their marketing to sell boards.

SCREW AM2+

I just bought a 6000+ and then they come and dump the 6400+ on me!

Rather uncool.

Still like my cpu though: for some odd reason it only shows 1 core's activity in taskmanager.

1st have you selected one graph per cpu?
2nd do you have a recent bios supporting x2 chips?
3rd have you upgraded your kernel from uniprocessor to one of the two multiprocessor kernels in the device manager section under system properties?
4th have you installed the dual core optimizer driver from AMD?
