I was looking into the maxtor one touch usb external storage devices when I saw the external HD cases.

I just setup a linksys wireless network and have 3 empty ports(not usb) on the router. I'd like to setup a HD server to store media and system backups.

What is the best bet to do this....

By an external USB one and connect it to the system or.....

Build something around an external case that has network capabilities?

I am new to the whole raid and external hard drive storage world, but want to set it up right.

If you're going to access it from more than one PC, then get NAS. If you're just using it as a backup, then USB is fine.

USB may also be faster for data transfer, as you have much more bandwidth with USB2 than a wireless network.

Here's your answer:

I have its et up now and it's serving my home office network as well as mi wifie and kids machines including serving as an iTunes server for the 3 kids.

Generally best option is to buy empty box and put drive sin yaself though lately, newegg's prices have favored devcies with two drives and they even throwing in a free 3rd drive for the next week or so.

Diskless is now $799 at newegg

Paying $999 gets ya three 500 GB Seagate drives.

Each drive is $120 so ya save $40 right there and ya then get the 3rd one free. Throw out another $129 and you'll have 1500 GB of storage (well that's abut 1350 to windows)
