i have an ECS-nforce3-A939 currently housing an AMD64 3800+. i plan to buy an opteron 180 2.4Ghz. My question is i know they are both 939's etc.. but can my board handle dual core? the manual and website is very unclear, i understand i may need a bios update but there is only one update does anyone know if the board can handle this without the update or if it can handle a dual core at all?

Apparently your MB will not support an Opteron 180. here is the CPU support list for your MB.

http://www.ecsusa.com/ECSWebSite/Support/CPU_Support_Model.aspx?detailid=532&MenuID=69&LanID=9

Mfg. did not provide BIOS instructions for Opteron, but for some X2 processors they did. It could be voltage requirements may no be supported by the MB's voltage regulators. There is some reason the board will not properly support the Opteron line.

Mfg.'s like gigabyte release complete board revisions or 'hard' updates(their 965 line of boards for example, rev 3 etc). Other companies like ASUS use BIOS updates, which work just as well in most instances, to upgrade their board's possibilities. ASUS 965 boards have few 'revisions' releases. ASUS's 'revision 1' boards are strong generally speaking.

You can still use a dual core X2, like the 3800X2. Kind of hard to find an X2 these days. Socket 939 has been discontinued. Does not support DDR2, only DDR. The more recent AM2 socket supports DDR2. See why it was discontinued.

think im gonna buy a 4200x2 i read they will hit 2.7 with stock cooling (which ill be using) and thats pretty much what i have now so this will be what i have now just doubled

I have two socket 939 systems running I use almost everyday. An FX55, ASUS A8N-SLI, 7600GT x 2, 4 x 512 PC4000 500 mhz. Crucilal Ballistic and an second system 4800 X2, ASUS A8N32-SLI, 7800GT x 2, Kingston Hyper X 2 x 1 GB. The FX55 is a wild overclocker and I have a lot of fun with it. The second best single core chip ever produced behind the 'king' FX57. LOL.

The X2 dual cores are becoming scarce. Dual core is the way to go unless you plan to upgrade your entire system. I've had my quad core since April.
