7900 series beat 8800gts?

Ok, this guy and me where having an argument on video cards. He says that his 7900gt 512mb (I think that was it, correct me if I'm wrong) is better then my 8800gts. His proof was because his card gets better fps then his friends 8800gts does. To bad his friend was running VISTA, which the 8800gts has crappy drivers for.

He also says the 8800gts is a marketing scheme and is a really bad card. According to all the charts on this forum, research and the charts on the forum, he is wrong.

"it will still beat powerhouse cards like the dual-GPU 7950 GX2 in many cases."

-Tomshardware on the 8800gts 320mb.

I'm wondering what you think about this, is he right? Can a 7900 own a 8800gts? Or is he a noob and has no idea what hes talking about? Or am I...

I run 7900GT's in Sli, and they get their proverbial a***s handed to them with a side salad of kick in the teeth by a 8800GTS 320MB, so tell that guy to "kiss your chocolate starfish" and rest assured that you have kick *** card.

i agree a whole 320% (lol). the card he has pretty much cant even hold a candle to it, and itll be even that much moreso if he decides that he wants to run vista himself too, because as you said, the drivers out currently are more subpar, and vista itself just runs games slower.

i own a 7800GT, which isnt that much slower than a 7900GT at all, and an 8800GTS 320 is around twice as fast as what i have in most cases that ive seen (in other cases its several times faster).

There are cases when that's not so my friend. http://www23.tomshardware.com/graphics_2007.html?modelx=33&model1=713&model2=711&chart=275

But still, take on an 8800 320MB and you are going home in an ambulance.

yeah, a 7800GTX 512 is faster than what i have which is a 7800GT 256, but, for the most part an 8800GTS 320 is at least twice as fast in most cases, especially when you start increasing the resolutions, then the gap only widens. the extra memory buffer of the 7800 GTX 512 certainly helps with higher resolutions though.

edit: speaking of memory, he probably has a 7900GT 256, since it doesnt look like a 512mb version was made for anything but the GTXs... unless he has a 7900GTX, whichcase then he would only have a 512mb version it seems, because they didnt make a 256mb version.

Ahh, the 256 is a slightly different story, one which does not go so well when one or indeed both of of my 7900's put the boot in. But we still get humiliated by the 8800GTS, so you can take some solace in that at least.

I have 2 8800GTS 320's in SLI and with everything maxed (ULTRA) in DOOM3 I am very happy.

Although there are many variables such as background programs running since your mate has a diff computer/setup etc.

Is your mates name Adrian by any chance?
Sounds like a douchebag i used to know.
One of those fckn know it all retards that tells u his P4 will keep up with my quad.

Hey as long as hes happy thinking he knows everything. Ignorange is bliss.

Never argue with an idiot, they bring you down to their level and beat u with their experience.

I'm hoping to hang it out until the GF9 series myself, with a 32nm Quad, hmm [:mousemonkey]

true, it does. ...but then if you compare their prices, its $440 for an open box oem 7950 gx2 at newegg

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130023R&Tpk=7950%2bgx2

for $360 you can get a retail 8800GTS 640, which pretty consistantly matches and outperforms the noticably more expensive (and outdated) 7950 gx2

i know price isnt so much the issue with what you were pointing out... but who would go for that when there are much better options available for less?... or for $60 more you can just get a retail 8800 GTX.

really though... he was just wondering about a standard 7900GT 256 compared to an 8800GTS 320. nothing about a GX2, which is just SLId 7950 512s. unless you happen to own one yourself... its probably pretty difficult to come by one for cheap. given enough tuning under DX10 though, even quad sli would probably perform as it shouldve before, compared to the disappointment of DX9s limitations, but yeah... anyhow.

Your friend is simply overlooking the fact that the video card is not always the (only) bottleneck and similarly, sometimes it is a waste of money to buy the high end video card if the other parts and OS config is not optimal.

Idiots like those shouldn't even be allowed to touch a computer.
Too bad owning a computer isn't like driving a car where you need a drivers license.

A 8800GTS is faster than a your friend's 7900.
