More Information

I've recently overclocked my E2160 and having got it to 3.2ghz and run through 3DMark06 three times (inconclusive I know!) was pretty happy with it, I then ran orthos but my CPU temp got so high it aborted. I then changed down to 3ghz which gave a stable orthos, after checking the temps I noticed some programs registered extremely high temperatures:

RivaTuner C2D plugin: 55/53C (Core0/Core1)
Speedfan 4.32: ~56C
CoreTemp 0.95: 70/70C
Abit UGuru: 55C

At the time of testing all programs were the latest version, also intel TAT doesn't like my Abit IP35-Pro so I couldn't check that.

If this is any help here are my idle temps:

RivaTuner C2D plugin: 28/29C (Core0/Core1)
Speedfan 4.32: ~30C
CoreTemp 0.95: 42/42C
Abit UGuru: 31C

I have mobo set to alarm if 65C is reached on CPU, at 3.2ghz it did, but hasn't on 3ghz, which leads me to believe that coretemp is wrong

If anyone could shed some light as to which program I should be believing I would be very grateful.

I'd go with Abit uGuru and Rivatuner myself. (click my hardware configuration to see why).

I usually use the new speedfan. Its temperatures are on average 15c lower then what they actually are. So if it reads 40c, its actually ~55c. O and if you use TAT it will get your temps up about 5c higher then orthos, but nothing will ever run your computer that hard. What cooler are you using btw?

I'm using the stock intel cooler. So do you think my temps are too high? Case ventilation is reasonable, Sonata III with one 120mm fan.

ya those temps are way to high

i am running a 6420 in a lan box at 3-3.2ghz 400-425fsb with the stock intel cooler - my temps are 65c max

If I were to believe RivaTuner and Abit, which give very similar readings to bios temps I'm fine. If I'm to believe coretemp however, yes, I'm in trouble.

RivaTuner, Speedfan & Abit UGuru are all about the same and CoreTemp is off in it's own little world and if there isn't a fire then I'd ignore CoreTemp and carry on regardless

Wow, for you nothing agree's for me riva and core temp agree. Speedfan is 15 too low.

I think you should turn off any speed control(in the bios) 1620 is not that fast for the stock heat sink.

Also why do you run your ram so hard? is it 1066 or better ram?

Those temps do seem a bit high....so make sure the heatsink is on right and pump up that fan speed....

with the 15c offset they all line up. the difference of 1c here and there are just a different polling time

Isnt the E2160 an Allendale Core L2 stepping?

If so, then Speedfan should be correct, coretemp .95 and TAT should both be reading about 15C too high. Because Coretemp and TAT use the wrong Tj Max temp (100C instead of the correct 85C)on allendales and possible ALL L2 stepping C2D's. The guys who said your temps are way too high, is probably high.

Running 56C load with stock is perfectly acceptable. Hell, as long as you run under 60C you have nothing to worry about. Not really considered "HOT" until you break 70C. I was running 56-58 with my Ninja before I lapped everything. I only lapped to see if I could do it(knew I could). Your temps are fine, actually probably better then most for stock cooling.

@Nukemaster:
My ram has D9 chips. And in no way am I pushing them, running undervolted at 2.1V, I've had it doing higher mhz before

@Littlescrapper:
It is an Allendale L2 with cache cut out.
Thanks for your help. Assuming that the temperature in coretemp is 15C too high I'm quite happy with the current temperature. I will be buying an aftermarket cooler tomorrow, do you think with this I'd be able to achieve a 3.6ghz, and what air cooler is the best? Longevity isn't a huge issue as I'll be replacing with a penryn asap.

@ C2DFTW - NICE!!!!!

@ little_scrapper - Makes perfect sense..... that would make speedfan right for that chip....and all is good

I think the infinity and the extreme-120 and a cou[ple others are just about the best air coolers but at that level your really splitting hairs as to which is "THE BEST" one. I mean a couple degrees C either way can just be a matter of how you mount your cooler. At that price level, assuming your buying from a good discount etailer like newegg or something, you really only need to be concerned with fit and functionality for your settup. As to wether you will hit 3.6GHz, you get what you pay for. My E4300 only does about 3.2Ghz max, but its and older one. Nowadays the E4300 is lucky to hit 3.0Ghz and 2.6-2.8Ghz is far more common. You will have to read and see how your E2160 overclocks in general to get an idea of what to expect.
