GPU Power Management...How To?

Considering the fact that even while idling, PCIx GPUs consume a significant amount of power compared to onboard grapics, what options exist (if any) to quickly switch from (whilst depowering) a PCIx GPU to onboard graphics when not running 3d software? I am in the process of building my new system specs and would like to know some tricks to help run an efficient system.

I use ATI Tool to underclock (as well as overclock) my 8800 GTS. A profile that I've created called "Minimum" loads after bootup which sets the GPU Core at 50 Mhz, and the GPU Memory at 100 Mhz.
