In one word, Yup. (Guessing it's a socket 939 here) you can upgrade to a cheap Athlon 64 X2 4200+ and a 8800GTS instead, which would be a lot more balanced for gaming, and would actually make a pretty good system if I say so myself.
I don't know a whole lot about computers. I have an Alienware Aurora system built in 2004. Im guessing the power supply is 350 watts. Im currently using a NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GS.
Im looking to upgrade my system on a $500ish budget. I want to play newer games like Tabula Rasa without wanting to pull out my hair from the performance.
Will a GeForce 7900GS give me much of a performance boost from my GeForce 7600GS?
I sadly only have a AGP mobo.
Well, you just kill your project. Those new high end card are only PCI-e (correct me anyone if I am wrong).
If you still want one, you will need a new motherboard, PSU, may be RAM (some todays MB support older ram and ever AGP), new CPU (could go with an Intel). It would be a bigger upgrade and may be a new build but you must have a nice case from Voodoo.
I don't think Nvidia makes 7900gs in AGP flavor. 1950pro is the best you can do I think or 1950xt. Those cards however need more amps on your power supply.
You shouldn't poor money on a AGP system. You should just sell you old system and buy a new one.
If its AGP Go For Ati X1950 Pro and change your psu
A X1950pro beats a 7900GS in most benchmarks and is definetly a preformance boost from your 7600GS.
Just Asking How did u get a 7600GS for a computer built in 2004? The 7600GS AGP was released like early this year.
I think your CPU would be holding you a bit too, I'd consider also getting a cheap dual core (3800 X2 or 4200 X2), if you do that, then most likely ~35-40 on max settings with 1280x1024.
