I have an Asus A8V Deluxe socket 939 mobo and I'm looking to do a processor upgrade. Asus' site says that the board will support a 4800 dual core. Does anyone have experience with these processors? Good/bad/ugly, any other recommendations? I game a lot, but do other things like music, spreadsheets and other apps etc. Right now I have a 64 3400, and I'm really just looking to do some upgrades to hold me over until I get a new PC. (probalby going to upgrade the video card and ram as well) Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks!

Yes, any 939 x2 will work in your motherboard even the Opterons, as for is it worth it? that depends on how much the x2 CPU is going to cost compared to building a whole new rig. As I've never used a single core 939 I wouldn't be able to tell you first hand how much of a performance difference there is between the two so I will just point you towards the charts :- http://www23.tomshardware.com/cpu_2006.html?modelx=33&model1=499&model2=479&chart=174 and let you work it out yourself.

I had a similar mobo and put in an opteron 170 and OC'd it from 2 to 2.2 (not great but stable). It is a great processor and very stable.

I went from a 3500 (venice) to the 4800 awhile ago, and the difference I've noticed is pretty good. System became alot more responsive, programs ran smoother, haven't looked back.

With that said, are you going to be buying one and if so, for how much? It may be worth your while getting a new board and CPU instead of upgrading your 939 rig if the costs will be similar.

Thanks guys. Well I wouldn't mind buying used, but I'm a bit leary of that. I'd like to buy it new for a reasonable price, but I'm having problems finding one. They don't seem to be that common. Any suggestions on where to go?

Try not to spend too much on 939 CPUs as they are outdated. It would probably be cheapest to buy a 3800+ X2, 4200+ X2, or Opteron 165 and just overclock one of them to 4800+ speeds.

I was going to let this drop until I read that some bunghole suggested using a 3800 dual core. Those processors, over clocked or not, are total crap.......... PERIOD ! A friend of mine builds custom computers for a living. The 3800's aren't worth it. Seen it over and over again. People didn't want to spend the extra money at the time, and we laughed at how the machines performed with these in them. DAWGS......

I have an a8n32 sli-deluxe with the 4800 on it. Mildly oc'ed.

Over the single core chip you have, it's a dream. Everything will run smoother and faster. Especially when you try and do more than one thing. It's not a true fx-60, but I don't think you really need one either. If you can find one, buy it.

[:mousemonkey:1] you so funny, wrong but funny.

The 4800+ is/was an INCREDIBLE processor... but just keep in mind, it is over 2 years old. My 4400+ easily overclocked to 5200+ speeds (2.6 GHz) so I'm sure you could expect the same or more mileage from a 4800+.

The problem is it looks like a 4800 socket 939 is quite hard to find. The ones I have find are absurdly priced. I may settle for a 4400 which seem to be more common or a 4600 which I've seen a few.

I have an Asus A8V motherboard w/ AMD 64 4000+. Funny... I haven't really thought about upgrading my computer until now and I realized that the AMD 64 Athlon X2 4800+ is no longer available through retail outlets. Most stable machine I have ever built. AMD roxorz!

I ended up scoring one off of ebay (still factory sealed). I haven't installed it yet, but but my research has led me to anticipate some significant boosts.

It was either upgrade my A8V to the max with the AMD 64 X2 4800+, an additional 2 GB of ram and a Saphire 3850 vid card or drop 3-5k for a new tower.

I am able to play Age of Conan now just with the new vid card, but look forward to unlocking the directx 10 power when I install Vista.

From what I have read, the only glitch to this will be my raid drivers and whether or not Promise has released something to support Vista.

Bottom line is that if you can find one, scoop it up and unleash the power of your A8V. Make sure it's the 4800+, 2MB of L2 cache!!!
