While shopping for a new(er) DVD player for home, I noticed a Toshiba (model
number SD-5980) that claims to up-convert to 720p or 1080i for use with
HDTV. Anyone here tried one of these (this model or others) and how well
does the upconversion turn out?

Lots of info on all models at www.avsforum.com. Some still have component
output.....

We have a Panasonic DVD-S97 that will upconvert at your choice of
resolutions. I tried both 1080i and 720p and settled on 720p as the best
picture from it, by a slight margin. And it is an excellent picture,
significantly better than our older DVD player that would only send at 480i
or 480p. Not quite HD, of course. There's nothing like the real deal --
but we are very pleased with this player.
Of course, the TV set itself (Sony KDF-60XS955) has a very good built-in
upconverter and will take any 480i picture you give it, process it and
upconvert it to 788p, the actual resolution for everything on the screen.
So, to really know what DVD picture is best, I think you would have to try
every resolution with an upconverting DVD player plus just send it 480i and
let the TV set do the job. Then, pick what looks best to you. Even then,
the result will probably vary with different DVD's.

Does HDMI make that much of a difference?
Also, I have heard that there is not much HDMI material out there.
True?

Just make sure your TV doesn't upconvert the input signals, unless it does a
poor job of it.

haven't actually compared component to hdmi, just used it cause it was there
:-) still using optical for audio

Experiment, but buy from a retailer you can get a refund from.
I haven't seen this specific model, but I have seen the output of the
Samsung HD841 (one of the first upconverting DVD players) on my set and
I wasn't impressed enough to keep it. I think these upconverting DVD
players are a good idea for people who don't have upconversion built
into their set, but are a waste of money otherwise.
Many vendors provide reasonable to high quality 1080i or 720p
upconversion technology built into the television set for all 480i and
480p sources, but some only apply the upconversion to the non-HD inputs
(evertyhing except: component, HDMI, DVI, SVGA, etc) If your set
applies upconversion to all the analog inputs (as mine does) then you
should first try to connect the DVD player via component cable (all
progressive scan DVD players I've seen offer component output) and just
use your sets upconversion.

What do you mean by "not much HDMI material out there"? HDMI is a cable to
connect video components digitally, similar to DVI but with audio
capabilities also.

If you go to the DVD players forum on avsforum.com, you will see very
long threads about the limits of the Samsung HD841 DVD player. IIRC,
there is new firmware that improves the Samsung, but I did not follow
the details on that. The Toshiba upconverter model that BB has had for a
while is also not regarded as very good.
Based on my reading of that forum, the best 2 "budget" upconverter DVD
players are considered to be the Panasonic S97 and Sony NS975 models.
The Panasonic S97 is about to be replaced by the S77 model ($249 USD
list), but the S77 is not out yet. I may get the S77, but I am still not
clear on whether the upconversion at the DVD side will really result in
a better picture or not. There appears to a, umm, range of opinion on this.

HDMI=(if I have it right) Hi Def Media Interface. Basically HDMI main diff
is one cable can carry both the audio, not sure what lvl of audio tho, & vid
whereas DVI will only carry the Digital Vid and for Digital audio you would
use a ToS or Coaxial Digital cable

Does the Sony TV automatically upconvert all signals or do you have to
change a setting?

regardless, the upconverted signal is only avaiable on the hdmi on that
unit as would be true with all of the other dvd players that i know of that
have an upconverter. those tat don't have an hdmi will have dvi instead.

Momitsu upconverts over component. There are a couple of others as well
(Bravo I think is one).

if you have a DLP or RP LCD TV, your TV will upconvert the progressive
scan signal to 720P native, you will not notice any difference in PQ
using HDMI or DVI or DVD player using upconversion, i have spoken to
several tech people they all say even component cable to DVI cable is
not much noticeable difference, i am using Harman Kardon DVD 22 which
is pixel base progressive scan DVD player it has very good PQ with
compnent video cables on my SONY gran Wega 55".
Use THX optimizer to calibrate your Video, u will be amzazed with PQ.
it is a cheaper alternative to calibrate it professionally.
Try HK DVD 31 which also plays DVD audio. here is the link
