A collegue of mine is looking to upgrade his video card. He is currently running P4 3.2, 1Gb main RAM and looking to upgrade from an ATI X740XL to an Nvidia Geforce 8800GTS 640. The question is :-

Will this run on his PCIe x16 version 1 slot? (Basically version 1 relates to the fact it was one of the first PCIe x16 slots available).

Thanks,

Well, as long as it's PCIx16, it should be fine, though it's going to be bottlenecked by his CPU and lack of RAM... I dont' see the need for the 640meg version, either. If he /really/ wants and can afford that, get the 320, and an extra gig of RAM. That'll show a lot more benifit than just the 640 version.

I think 'ill tell him to get the 320Mb version and an extra gig of RAM. One other thing do you think 8600GTS might be a more sensible option in view of his at best 'moderate' CPU?

Thanks for all the advise.
