Heya guys, recently my DELL XPS (P4 dual core) motherboard/CPU died (thats what they said, and sent a new one out) well It arrived yesterday, and i remembered I had a half a tube of Arctic Silver 3 still.

Arctic Silvers site recommends you place a thin line only on it (in a specific direction), do Not spread, and then just place the heatsink down on the processor, and twist slightly a few degrees side to side, then mount in place.

My dell heatsink is on a kind of hinge that lets it only move up and down, to clamp onto the processor, it cant be twisted at all. How should I go about the application then? Just clamp onto it with that little unspread line of AS, or should I spread it before hand at all?

Thanks guys

[EDIT]
This is what the Processor looks like, the red i drew in to indicate roughly where the Die sits under the cover heat spreader.

Spread a very thn layer, doing so will work fine. The thermal paste fills in any small gaps and forms a bond with the heatsink. Spreading it out in a thin layer works fine.

I'd carefully spread a SMALL dot around with a cut out piece of cardboard or plastic like a mini putty knife on the processor. Do the same thing in the middle of the bottom of the heat sink, then WIPE IT OFF THE BOTTOM OF THE HEATSINK WITH PAPER TOWEL. This fills the micro pores in the bottom of the heatsink. DON'T wipe it off the processor though LOL!

Since its a P4 and has a heatspreader ontop with a rectangle shaped die underneath, I should only manually spread it in a sorta oval over where the die is, or over the whole heat spreader?

Spread a very thin layer on top of the cpu, not the heatsink. Just a small rice sized dot on top of the cpu cover. Then spread it out very thin.

Gotcha, but since it uses a heat spreader like:

Do I cover the whole thing, or just where the die is positioned underneath the big spreader(indicated by the red)? (as they say for heatsinks that can be swiveled, to only place a line going down the center middle, and then just place down the heatsink and swivel it a tiny bit)

Use a very small amount. Like the size of a grain of rice or two. Spread it very thin. Some people stick their finger in plastic wrap and spread it thinly. Do not use too much.
