Overclocking a Q6700 to 3.2 (worth it?)

From what I understand you can overclock a Q6700 to 3.2 on stock voltage.

First question is what kind of difference would that make my daily tasks?

I personally am not a gamer but do use photoshop, dreamweaver, dvd shrink, and multiple applications (to the extreme).

I here it's easy to do but would require an after market fan, if this is correct, which fan/heatsink do you recommend.
Do you think over clocking is worth it for me now, or I should wait?

The Zalman 9500 or 9700 my recommendations. Other great ones are Ultra-120 extreme, Tuniq Tower, Freezer Pro 7. Other factors are like what motherboard you have. If you have the Asus Striker Extreme it baresly fits most coolers

My motherboard doesn't have a cooler it is a DG33TL

The Intel one which can be overclocked through software. The case though is a CM690 and it has 2 built in 120mm fans 4 yate loons 120mm fans and 1 Evga 80x80x15 fan which cools the motherboard and is on the other side of the CPU.

I'm looking into buying a better motherboard. I don't have a big budget so the ASUS P5K-E/WIFI-AP LGA 775 Intel P35 looks appealing. However since my current motherboard provides the features I want and if it is overclockable to 3.2 which is the maximum I would go, for I won't go higher than stock voltage. I might keep my current motherboard.

dude, dont spend your money on a heatsink/cooler yet, you need, NEED to get a better motherboard, because you won't be able to do too much with that one.
I would suggest something like the Gigabyte P35-DS3R, because it is a good balance between price and performance, but, I guess it also depends on what video card(s) you would be running.
So, for under $200, you can get a better motherboard and even a modest CPU cooler, and then you should have no problem OCing your CPU.

TRUe120 on my q6700 @ 3.6 hit 1.416v (so a bit over stock .1v) a max 42*C in a hot hot house, with lots of air moving through the heatsink tho...

66c on a box cooler or after market? i'm surprised a box cooler could even do 66* if it is the case.

Joe on the go! It's best to start a new thread for that.

Hey, Zodiac! Can you do me a favor and run Core Temp, and then list the VID of your q6700 here, please??

Thanks!!

Not to shabby, whats the Loaded voltage? 1.2250 is the third best VID, so not bad at all!

Did you manage to get it Prime stable for hours, or not?

Hi guys, I'm also running a Q6700 and I'd like to know how much I can SAFELY overclock my CPU.

Im running 4 Gb of DDR2, Q6700 with a stock fan, 9800GTX, 690i LT

I'm new to this overclocking business, a little help?

Read the sticky. With a stock cooler, you'll be limited in OCing by temps.

Start a new thread if you have any further questions.

A lot of people OC the Q6600, you should be able to do about the same with the Q6700. From what I read, it is common to get into the 3.2GHz to 3.6GHz range. I would replace the fan before even starting this though.

The Xigmatech HDT-S1283 wasn't mentioned above but it is a good-performing cooler that isn't too expensive.

I have a Q6700 with a asus motherboard p5ne

for newbies you can just use asus built-in motherboard automatic overclocking
in by selecting 5% but not stable at 10% or more "except for internet surfing"

however you can quickly do an overclock without the hassle at 2.9Ghz

1. set the configfree to manual
2. set the ram to unlinked
3. go to the fsb for the processor and change it to 1160mhz
4. at stock voltage for everything and you get 2.9ghz stable

now if you want more, that's up to you but I wouldn't go further you've paid a lot
of money for this processor you don't want to lose it besides comeon 2.9ghz QUAD is a lot of power and I didn't see a diffrence even when at stock speed on games like Call of duty however I play Flight simulator x and there a saw a big diffrence
when overclocked "still cant use light blook effect"

makesure you're using Big Typhoon as you cpu fan cooler, makesure you change the northbridge heatsink and add a southbridge heatsink. because the motherboards one is crap.

u got liquid cooling? you can get 3.2ghz

Dude I been Running 3.4 for 6 months and no problem. also did 3.6 but only once. Without askng you hace to replace the heatsink for a performance before you try all this settings.

Running: ASUS Commando MB, Q6700 oc to 3.4, ASUS Silent Square EVO heatsink and Raidmax SMILODON case (Mid tower)= was getting 25-30F. Now am using a Cooler Master HAF32 (Full tower) case and temp = 40-47F

I have a similar setup, TRUe120, Q6700, what did you use for a bus speed and multiplier to get to 3.6? How stable has it been?
