I just started throwing together some old parts to make a PC for my sister. Everything works great, but there is one thing that's kind of bugging me and her... Occasionally, pretty much at random, there will be a message stating that the proper boot device needs to be selected and that the proper boot device must be inserted. Well, we just restart it and it goes away.

Things I have tried:
1. Replace CMOS battery - Thought that maybe it was failing and loosing it's settings.

2. Change jumper settings on the HDD. Tried both CS and Master. (It's and IDE drive if you haven't guessed)

3. Change the BIOS settings from Auto-detect to user set - this way it always has the correct HD settings.

4. Messed with boot order

That's about all I could think of, really. Any other suggestions?

This system's spec:
ECS PT890T-A
Pentium D 8xx @ 2.66Ghz
2x 1GB Patriot Extreme DDR2 800 5-5-5-18
Some generic HP brand CD burner (IDE - I think it may actually be ASUS)
Maxtor 80GB 7200RPM HDD (Also IDE - not sure on the exact model #)
420W Raidmax PSU

*Like I said, it's a really crappy spare-parts machine... lol*

Perhaps the HD doesn't always power up like it should. Have you tried using a different power plug from the power supply yet?
